Strange you'd be due the repayment of a sum "far into four figures" when you haven't claimed and you weren't aware that HMRC were investigating your tax affairs.
Which tax does the repayment relate to? When you called did they explain the reason for the repayment?

The simple question to this is, to be due a refund of £xxxx from HMRC means you’ve over paid them £xxxx in taxes. You will know this is the case, so if you don’t know this is the case then don’t think this is legitimate and you can splash the cash as you could end up with a demand for the money back in future.
