HMRC tax fraud or error?

Well, it turns out that lines before 08:00 are blocked. But I got through very quickly. The lady to whom I spoke said that the repayment is not an error or a fraud. I'm still not sure I believe it but hey ho. At least I now have it all on record.

So you owe a substantial amount of money for what reason? Did they say?

Did you tell them the letter was worded oddly and the writer needs sacking.

OP: "Hi, I got paid a lot of money that I didn't claim for, is this an error?"
HMRC: "This is HMRC, we can do no wrong, there is no error."

Your tax dollars hard at work, ladies and gentlemen.

He claimed something that shouldn't have been claimed. :p

You have totally the wrong end of the stick... the whole premise of this thread is that HMRC made a large payment to him that he didn’t ask for, hence why he thought it might be fraud related. He didn’t claim anything.

HMRC thinks he did anyway...

He called up HMRC asking why they made this payment, and they said there is no mistake with the payment. They don’t think there’s a problem, so again you have the wrong end of the stick somehow.

To me it’s still a bit curious - why were the wrong bank details on the letter? What did they say the payment was for, had you overpaid previously?
