Holidays 2022

Ugh. Had an email from Ryanair saying I need to be at the airport earlier than I've booked My transport for.

Left an hour and a half as I thought no checked bags would be OK. But with all this chaos it's looking like I need to rebook!

I had the misfortune of travelling out of Stansted on 31st May and in on 1st June. It was as bad as I've ever seen it.

I was flying hand baggage only but I can see why Ryanair were telling people to get there 3 hours before your flight. I'd say that's an absolute minimum based on the queues for the bag drop. Security was manic. I'd arrived there about 1h45m before my flight and by the time I got through and walked briskly to the gate the flight was closing.

On the way in the passport queues were typical Stansted. 1/3 of the E-gates open and massive queues.

It's an absolute toilet of an airport.

I don't understand why anyone would want to go aboard at the moment, after Covid we all knew the world was going to be a harder place to live in for a good few years, inflation was going to happen and was advised by numinous experts and others which in turn was always going to cause everyday people to rethink wages and strikes where of course going to happen.

We won't be going away for at least another 2 years so I have no stress what so ever over any of this.

Why not? I'm going to the south of france on Tuesday by Eurostar + train from Paris.

Haven't flown for so long it feels like a new experience.

This is Bristol (forgot to say). I think I'll get the earlier bus. I'll have to buy a new ticket. But I have no idea what I'm going to find when I get to Bristol

If Bristol is anything like Stansted was (no idea why I assumed you were flying from there though) then yeah, good idea to get an earlier bus.

Not had a Holiday this year yet, we were in New York/Michigan in December though.

Currently have planned;

July - Italy. Turin for a friend's wedding, spending a couple days there and a few in Milan.
August - Finland. My wife is racing an Ironman so we are spending a couple days in Kuopio-Tahko and a couple in Helsinki.
September - Maine, USA for a friend's wedding. Fly to New York and drive up the coast.
October - Ohio, USA for a friend's wedding. Fly to Michigan (we lived there) to spend time with friends then drive down to Columbus.

One of the last two might not happen, not sure if we can fit both in but we are going to try.

I’m flying from MAN in Sept with RA. Goodness knows what stupid time I need to leave home for a 6:10am flight. No point in staying at a hotel. Plus price isn’t worth it. Three years ago- got a deal for £99 for room, three course meal (4-5 choices per course) Looked the other day £160 for just the room.

I recommend 3-4 hours early its a mess right now.

Why not go the full hog and just not leave the house at all?

I've been abroad many times both during, and "post" Covid, and I haven't regretted any of it.

Imagine you want a 2 week holiday, and to get that you might have to endure 1.5 hours of chaos in return for that holiday, along with the usual expenses. Doesn't seem like too awful a trade off, surely?

Well said. We live in incredibly fortunate times where the average Brit can afford to go to another country for their holidays! This wasn't the case 50 years ago.

Does last minute deals exist anymore? We are looking at August in a 2/3hr distance. Should I just book now or do some cracking deals appear out of now where?

End of July and early August, Scotland for a week with 16 of my peoples in a big AirBNB

Are these delays only happening to budget airlines?

My uncle went to the US a few weeks ago with Aer Lingus. He had no problems going through the airport and security.

Jet2 are fine. Know about 12 couples/groups/families who flew with Jet2 - including my parents and all their flights were on time or even took off 5 mins early.

My colleague's flight Luton - Barcelona was delayed by 12 hours (Easy Jet) and couldn't spend the day at Barca as intended as had a cruise ship to board.

Just landed in Naples. All in all a smooth experience considering Luton Airport and easyjet. Even caught a few Zs on the flight.

Mid 30s temps , pizza and ice cream all week. Calories... Hold my beer :D

No, it's a mixture of airline staffing and airport staffing in general. Some of the worst hit appear to be holiday charter airlines such as TUI, which would not really be considered a budget airline.
