*** Holidays & Travels 2023 Thread ***

now this i've never understood .. holidays ... i've lived in 3-4 country's and except for small things there all the same .. so why bother ?and yes i have done holidays.. wife said i had to .. but 2-3 days in it's exactly like home ? same problems just different buildings and people is it just me ?
and the money could be spent on different things
I must admit for a few weeks full of memories I wouldn't spend the amounts mentioned. I know I bang on about my Camino but 8 weeks in Spain for 1 k all in and still pleased to be back home.
These amounts I would be converting my attic or Airbnb in garden

Everyone enjoys different things in life - I'm just enjoying seeing different parts of the world, exploring them and doing it in comfort. The memories are of much nicer places than the Queen has sent me for the last 20 years...

You have those experiences because you haven't been to places that is different to the UK? Have you left continental Europe? and been to a country that doesn't speak English?

It's less of a "holiday" for me, but more an adventure, or a sense of it, with a safety net....I wouldn't go to the jungle of the Amazon alone for example.

All shares very similar culture to the UK, half of them were part of the empire.

For me, I don't find beach resort or any of those kind of relaxing holiday interesting, perhaps one day i will. Just don't feel like paying thousands and lay down, i could do that at home for free.

I want to see places that i can't see at home, eat things i can't eat at home.

Same here, like to be out and about, treat the hotel as somewhere to get your head down and occasional meals, go cheap'ish but comfortable.

Barra for a long weekend - the runway is on the beach!
Trip to London at some point.
Berlin for a stag do in July.
Solo week in Greece (Fly into Athens and out of Crete I think, but not booked yet).
Thinking Vietnam at the end of the year, maybe over Christmas. She’s doing a course this year which is pretty expensive and I missed a promotion I thought I would get so May have to reign in the spending unfortunately.

The problem with business class is once you've done it you'll never want to go back, especially long haul.

I can completely agree with this. Only been in business class once on a return flight from New York when there was an issue with the screen on the chair I was supposed to be in. Since it was an extra leg room seat I wanted to sit there but the guy at the check-in desk said have a word with the stewardess at the plan to see if there was anything she could do. Explained again about wanting the extra leg room as I'm over 6ft and get handed a glass of champagne and shown through to business class. Nice wee sleep on the flight home and everything. :D

As much as I’d like to fly business, I just don’t think it’s worth the cost. I’d rather have an extra holiday than spend £2k more on flights!
Cheapest economy flights to Tokyo from Edinburgh are £800. Business is £2300.
That £1500 is an extra holiday or two!
Ultimately you get to the same place at the same time. I generally can’t sleep when I’m travelling regardless of the seat so just don’t get the benefit. When I have slept, I wouldn’t want to sleep through the business class benefits.
I’ll stick to the rear of the plane. Plus, never had an issue nipping to the galley for beer, wine and snacks whenever I want!

I've only done Business Class to Lisbon which is no different to economy except the middle seat is blocked off, and that was because the upgrade was about £10 or something.

For pure value for money, i just can't bring myself spending money on it, when looking at the hotel upgrade or other things that money can buy, from another holiday, a new camera, lens, computer and think....just suck it up and get a free Mac when you get back for free!

But no doubt if I win the lottery i will give it a go though, I won't deny that.

BA’s Club Europe is a bit rubbish - as you say, they just block off the middle seat. I wouldn’t pay cash for it either unless it was a cheap upgrade like yours. You do get the increased baggage allowance, seat choice at booking, quicker security and the lounges as part of the ticket though which all adds to a better airport experience and start to the holiday.

Mind you, the Maldives holiday I was just on had an internal domestic flight after the international one to get to the island, and that had a 20kg limit on baggage per person. The BA flight gave us two 32kg bags per person (I don’t know why anyone needs 64kg of luggage for a holiday, I’ve only used that sort of allowance deploying to the Middle East when it included my body armour and helmet…) so there was a lot of wasted allowance there…

Last year we went to St Lucia, so this year is a cheaper year

At the moment, all we have got is a few days booked for a golf trip, then a week in a cottage in Scotland
If funds permit, we will probably try and get abroad for a week at some point, but we are saving for a more expensive holiday in Antigua next year, so it might just be UK breaks this year
Ive just booked a place in St Lucia called 'Sheer Rocks' it looks incredible!

The way i look at is is...an extra £1000 get me a heck of an upgrade in hotels for the entire holiday, vs 2 fligfhts.

I have enough points i think to get an Business class long haul....just not found the right deal yet.

ive done business once and honestly, as nice a the experience is, id rather save and go economy/premium and be able to afford another holiday with the savings.

I wanted to go away Christmas 2023 as never been away around that period of time.

Any suggestion of a resort type place in the sun to relax but enough to go outside of the complex and explore?

The kids would like nothing more than Walt Disney World Resort Florida but that would drive me nuts!
