Home Assistant beginners

The problem with relying on AI or some 3rd part scripts to get something like Proxmox up and running is that if something goes wrong, you are setting yourself up for a very frustrating time because you don't really know what you are doing.

The alternative is to pick up Home Assistant Green and it's all pre-built into a handy box.
Not really, again speaking from experience, find the logs, copy and paste into Gemini and ask it to base its answers on official resources. I had an issue with immich after something was deprecated, I had no idea how to fix. Asked Gemini and gave it the logs and pointed it to immich resources and I'd fixed it within an hour.

I've tempted fate now..... :(

You're doing it wrong.

Install the opencode addon and get it to fix everything

I mean if even Paul knows how to use, anyone can....

Wow most amazing project I've stumbled across in years

No new hardware required...

- just spin it up in docker
- point it at an rtsp feed such as one of your security cameras or frigate
- push detections to MQTT for HA to pick up

EDIT: Appears to also be available via a HA addon (source alexbelgium (not sure how upto date and maintained it is tho))

It identities birds spotted by your camera?

Do the Greens use an SD card, I initially had a Pi but that didn't work well for some reason.
The other benefit to a Green would be almost zero downtime as of it for some reason doesn't work straight away I can just power up my current system.

I used to think I wanted everything on one device, but more and more separate devices has many benefits.

EMMC Flash memory.

Decided I'll go with the Green. The only downside I see is cost but that brings reliability, ease of use and maintenance.
My server can just run Plex Server, which means I can just stick Debian on it for reliability.

Edit: ordered the Green, i did think about trying the Pi5 again but with the official M.2 HAT+ and a bigger PSU, but my daughter wants that as her first computer which i thought was a great idea. If she messes anything up reflash and off she goes again.

Thanks for the heads up on this project. I installed Birdnet-Go as a HA app and pointed it towards my external cameras which have microphones. That was all that was required. It's a very, very professional looking application. It's really interesting to see the varieties of birds that frequent my garden. Some detections are a bit suspect but I think most are spot on

Maybe I'm being dumb, but how did you install it as a HA app? I'm running HAOS bare metal so that would be easiest if I can install birdnet as an addon.

You’re on the right track now. I went with Birdnet-go. The others seemed to be for the Pi or specialist hardware.

There was some initial set up to do once installed but nothing major. I signed up for an account with the Cornell project but that’s not compulsory.

Make sure your cameras have microphones btw as not all do! They also need to be capable of streaming to HA. Birdnet accepts quite a variety of streams so you should be good to go. If you’ve not got video streams set up for your cameras already then this will be the point where you’ll have to stop and think…

Thanks, will install that in a bit. For all cameras set up already in frigate, 2 Reolink out the back with audio is what i intend on sending to Birdnet so should be good to go.

If you've got your cameras set up in Frigate then it'll be a matter of copying and pasting the RTSP addresses into Birdnet. The way it was being described was that it would hook into HA camera entities. That's not the case - it's a direct link to the cameras

This is not necessary great as you're putting 2 rtsp stream loads on each camera

Instead use Frigate's go2rtc to restream each feed. Ai prompt

" how do I use the audio from a frigate camera instead of a direct camera rtsp feed (provide current frigate config)"

To process audio from a camera running through Frigate, tap directly into go2rtc—Frigate's built-in streaming engine.

Frigate NVR

Rather than pulling a second stream from the IP camera itself (which can stress low-powered camera hardware), go2rtc exposes a low-latency RTSP restream on port 8554 containing both video and audio.

Green is arriving today, so what's the procedure?

Make a backup onto a USB stick. Turn it off.
Power up the new, doesn't matter the IP or anything, restore and that's it?

Woah!! Awesome find! I'd had exactly the same thought since I saw a girl doing this manually on Clarkson's Farm - I'd started building a rough scaffold app, but this is on a plate!! Trying this weekend!!
