Home Assistant beginners

Because it’s connected to the router by cable? Also, did you set up a WiFi connection at any point? Not that I’d advise it - you want HA to have a wired connection
Never set up a wifi connection point. Its only plugged into the ethernet. It just wont show on my ipad, phone or wifi enabled laptop….but its all working ok on the work laptop connected to ethernet only

It does look that way…… is there something in home assistant that isnt switched on or something to allow wifi access
It will be down to your network itself. Either all those devices are on the WiFi extender and it has a separate SSID (network name)... Or possible the router itself has disabled traffic between wired and wireless LAN.

Is your wireless ap a router? Sounds like you've got your WiFi behind a separate NAT/IP range.

No seperate ssid…… the upstairs extender has two ethernet ports, i have the ethernet port attached to an 8 port gigabit switch. The ethernet on laptop still has the same sky id name, the wifif extender has a different name.

be patient with my guys as i am really new to all this IT techy stuff.

What extender is it? Do you know how to access the config page?

Do you know how to check your IP address? Check what your IP is on Eth and then WiFi. That'll pinpoint the issue.
Its a bt extender using power socket……its not giving me a wifi IP address on the rpi4 its only returning an ethernet address

wlan ip address is blank, which makes me think my rpi4 doesnt have wifi

Have you connected the RPi to WiFi? It doesn't do it automatically.

Edit: point stands, get the IP of your laptop on WiFi, and then get the ethernet IP of your laptop. If theyre on different subnets that your issue.

How do i do that, as theres no operating system. Home assistant is the operating system…..
Sorry I made an edit. Tell us your IP address on your laptop first. Connect to both WiFi and ethernet and open Command Prompt and type ipconfig /all. Right click, select all, then right click again (it'll copy to your clipboard to paste here).

I’ll need to do that tmrw now as im back downstairs again……..
Sure, so basically if the first 3 chunks are different (i.e. 192.168.0 and 192.168.1), it means your extender upstairs is acting like a dhcp server. That means that technically your wireless and wired networks are two distinct networks.

To fix it, you need to configure the wireless hotspot. It should have a configuration IP printed on it somewhere. You can then login and disable DHCP. Give it a minute to flush through and then theoretically everything should work.

It's quite hard to connect the Pi to WiFi for the reason you said. It's also not recommended at all.
