Home Assistant beginners

Has anyone hooked up any Matter over Thread devices yet? I picked up some IKEA Matter switches but I’ve not yet got a Matter/ Thread dongle. Just wondering if it’s just the same experience as connecting Zigbee devices

The only matter over thread device I have setup is my Tado heating. You still need a Thread Border Router but this doesn't necessarily connect to HA like you do with a Zigbee dongle. For example, the Tado X programmer that connects directly to my boiler acts as a Thread Border Router. The Tado X wireless thermostat is an end device but the more routers you have, the better the network. This part acts the same as what Zigbee does.

Has anyone managed to get Home Assistant remote access working with cloudflare zero trust?

For me, working means being able to access it via the iOS app without having to load up any separate software when out and about? I’ve seen the guides online but none of them really mention app access?

I’m not totally against paying for the built in version - however like most people I’m loathe to add another subscription.

Why not just set up a VPN? Much easier to do.

I set up zero trust via Cloudflare as I didnt want to turn on a VPN every time. I use Tailscale already for other self hosted things, but gave Cloudflare a go for fun, for HAOS.

Don't ask me how to do it though, every time I look at Cloudflare admin panels my mind draws a blank.

I looked at the How Tos for Cloudflare but didn’t have the patience to work through them especially as I already had a VPN to my home network set up. To greatly simplify things you can also pay to support Cabu Nasa. One of the perks is one click remote access.

To answer my own question, I’d forgotten that my two Apple HomePods act as Thread Border Routers so I didn’t need any additional hardware. Just finished connecting a BILRESA scroll wheel to Home Assistant. For anyone trying to do the same and failing, the QR code is on the device in the battery compartment. It’s not the one on the box… Took me a good hour to work out what to scan

As I don’t want to have to load up and connect to a vpn every time I want to access HA away from home. If there is a way to do this then I’d love to know.

I’m comfortable following guides but it involves paying for a domain as I aren’t trusting any free domains. So I want to be confident it will work as seemless as the YouTubers make out. As an example one guide shows that you to accept a security warning every time you access it via a browser ..

Yep I mentioned that in my post, although I have no need for the online back up or the Alexa/Google voice assistants

I've been using Cloudflare Tunnels for a couple of years and never seen a security warning - they'll issue a valid SSL certificate for the domain.

Cloudflare will sell you a domain for very little money. I think the cheapest is a .uk which is about $5/year.

Does anyone else's Hive Hub appear to go offline after an internet outage ?

Resolution seems to be to power cycle the Hive Hub ?
This is the case for all Internet connection required items from what I understand.

It's one of the reasons why over the last few years UPS (and now even a Jackery Unit) has been obtained to keep anything that doesn't have their own battery power up for a minimum of 3 hours.

No I don't think that's the norm, internet dependent devices seem to re-establish themselves post outage

So just to be clear
After any internet interruption I noticed that the hive hub would become unreachable by both HA and even the mobile app

( previously noticed during a router active/passive failover so I thought it could be a quirk of VLANs being replumbed which can have adverse affects )

However today it was observed when the primary router lost internet for just 5 minutes this really surprised me as in all fairness the Hive should have reconnected

You said you need to power cycle to get them back online. Did your router lose power and lose connection that way or was it just the ISP side that the router lost connection to? Because if it was the ISP side, no action should be necessary as you described, as the only thing that needs updating would have been the router/ont (which would do so on their own in most cases). But if it's a power outage, depending on which devices power back up first (and if some devices were not impacted because they were battery backed but not the router), then it can get messy (since everything else will power on and check for connection and fail and not attempt again for security reasons) before the router even has booted up and performed all checks.

What's the best doorbell for HA

Have a eufy duo wired but thinking reolink poe seems to be the gold standard so to speak
I've got the reolink POE doorbell and it works really well with home assistant, good surfaced events etc. Also got it tied into frigate. I've not sorted out 2 way audio yet though to be fair, few hoops to jump through there from what I've heard!

I'm quite interested in getting a few of the new Ikea matter devices but at present don't have any thread devices at all, so was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of a suitable dongle etc? I was looking at possibly the Zigbee 3.0 & Thread Dongle Lite (Here)
