Lovely Wolver-ampton!
looking at possible getting one these. Seen a load on autotrader, less than 60k, some with FSH either 1.8 or 2.0 VTEC

can anyone give me some feedback - i know you guys know your stuff so would appreciate some advice and tips, what might be duff, what might need looking at and areas or problem i can look.

not knowing much about cars, ive read that honda's are decent engines and that parts are readily available and cheap. max spend is 3k

im 32, been had a license since 17 but only driven for perhaps 3 years in total off and on. had a 1.1 fiesta and no claims and driven loads of hire cars.

ta muchly.

The Accord is a brilliant choice for somebody who just wants a cheap, no hassle car. They are very reliable and will cause you very little trouble.

Excellent (seen your posts mr fox and if you rate something then I think I can do no wrong)

So, assume the 1.8 will be a little better around town fuel wise and obviously less to insure. Would that be the right idea?

To be honest I doubt there are huge differences in economy between them - I'd focus on looking for the best condition, reasonably high spec car you can for your money rather than whether its a 1.8 or a 2.0. Avoid the Type-R becuase it brings with it additional running costs you probably can't be bothered with and don't need.

Try and get an Executive if you can, as they are loaded with kit, and toys are nice.

Insurance at 32 will be highly reasonable and I doubt very much different between models.

Excellent. Think the exec comes with leather trim - the missus is one of these veggie types and wont let me have a leather sofa, so I doubt a leather interior will please.

Already discounted the type-r as I expect even at low mileage it will have been thrashed and also a possible target for vandals or dodgy mo-fos.

Thanks for advice.

The difference in MPG between the 1.8 and 2.0 is only (according to official figures) about 2MPG. The 2.0 is (was) more popular than the 1.8 so you'll have much more choice if you include them in your search.

I've got an X-reg Accord and I've had 0 problems with it, despite being a bit lax with its servicing :o

And although it's no sports car, there's still a little bit of vtec to be enjoyed at the expense of fuel economy, so hopefully it won't bore you after 2 minutes :)

And the exec does have leather.

I'm not fussed about it being a nippy car, but nice to have a bit of oomph when you stick your foot in. Sometimes you need a bit of power. Mentioned in another post, I find comfort to be a bigger selling point than BHP. AC would be nice but built in satnav no need with the price of mobile satnav units so low.

current discussion between my financial advisor (aka her indoors) seems to think accord's are too big - having driven a vectra all around cornwall for 2 weeks last year, in the narrow cornish roads, I think the accord will be fine - looks smaller to me (and wasnt impressed with the vectra sri one bit - vvt engine was terrible in m-way traffic!)

If it comes to the crunch and the missus vitos the accord then a 1.6 civic may have to do.

Ignore her, its the typical woman opinion that big is bad. The Accord is a nice size, neither too big nor too small. Virtually every single one you find will have AC.

i would ignore the sporty accords and go for a well specced 2.0 se,the only thing the 2.3 accords do in my experience is cost more and make a bit more noise with no other gain.

nice cars.

Not strictly true, but more reliable than most of the competition. Its always a good laugh to ring up Honda for some part prices. Unipart will become your best friend.

Your first point is invalid. It has been proven by parliament, congress, CERN and Davison High School for Girls that it is actually impossible to thrash a VTEC engine. Such activity when applied to a VTEC engine is called 'Driving it properly/how it was designed to be used'

As for dodgy mofo's? Perhaps, but there are other more desirable cars out there. Its just an accord on steroids for goodness sake.

Fact remains, that it's an awesome car that drives far, far better than cars much smaller than itself, turns in amazingly for a car its size (although i'd expect no less from a type R), it sounds awesome and apart from a few niggles, is generally very solid.

However, if you have no interest or need for a drivers car then its not for you, it's basic internally and on the raw side.

Your choice :)

An accord on steroids, maybe. But having a Type R badge will attract attention more than 1.8LS... Perhaps I'm just a cynic. (I said cynic, not civic lol)

Plus, I won't get a type r for under 3k. I won't want to pay the higher insurance on a type r either. I pretty much, don't want a type r. :)

I have never attracted any attention with either of my 2 type r's

Insurance is very cheap for them considering what they do ect

The only dodgy mofo around mine attracts is Gaijin above you

If your just after a cheap reliable car then personally I would say go for it ( i mean a non type r)

Stop making me want a Type R :(

Tbh I'd do it in an instant but i'm scared of missing all the nice toys on my SE Exec :o

And running it will probably rape my purse.

Sell your car to OP

Personally I would rather an ATR than a SE Exec with toys , toys serve me no purpose in a car as I like to drive

Thats nonsense my friend I had a Y reg Accord 2L SE Exec which I got for £7000 with 42k in 2005 it had the following Spec:

Front and Rear Electric Windows
Heated and Electric Mirrors
Heated Front Seats
Climate Control and AC
PAS,Alarm and Immobiliser
Electric Drivers Seat
Front Fogs
Leather Interior

To Be honest the non Type R VTEC engines don't have much pull below VTEC so I found myself giving it extra beans to make progress hence it drank more fuel - I was lucky if I got 30-35mpg combined

I then switched to a Accord Type R which I got for £4400 with 98k in 2007 and it feels tighter than my previous Accord. The R has the following Spec:

Reacro Front Seats
Lumber support (driver seat)
Front Electric Windows
Electric Mirrors
PAS,Alarm and Immobiliser
Raised rear Spoiler
ATR Body Kit

The ATR has a lot more pull in the lower revs meaning I don't rag it like a boy racer everywhere surprisingly I get 28mpg combined 30 if I am lucky.

Insurance wise I was paying £700 on the normal Accord and I pay £500 on the Type R (I don't get it either)

Ruuning cost wise of course fuel is dearer as the car only like super unleaded but as for repairs and servicing I spent more on the normal Accord than I have on the Type R.

As long as the ATR has had its common issues sorted (auto tensioner, gearbox syncros) and it has FSH then you should be on to a winner

If you are dead cert on buying a Standard Accord then you can't go wrong but don't expect it to be far cheaper to run than a Type R.

Of course it will be cheaper to run a standard accord than a type r , Look at things like the cost of parts and compaire them such as brakes there massive on the type r , 300 miles to £60 of petrol , more regular oil changes , you have 215bhp through the front tyres so they dont last long , waterpumps are an issue among a lot of other common problems not just gear syncros .
