That's done nearly 120k though.. I'm looking at cars with 50/60/70 mileages. I appreciate the one you link to says "motorway miles" but that's no guarantee is it. I understand that a car that's done high m-way miles will in essence be better condition than a 50k car that does stop/start journeys... But so many queues on the motorways these days, the whole "motorway miles" doesn't quite swing it for me.

So, it's going to be a 1.8/2.0 high spec model, not the exec due to leather trim, and as many toys as I can get for the cash.

Sounds like a plan. I'll have a butchers at the Autotrader site a bit more.

You are looking at cars up to 9-10 years old. Large cars. It's unreasonable to expect 50,000 miles becuase most people dont buy a car like that and then do 5k a year in it.

Maybe, but even with queues on the motor way you will be getting in and out of the car less, and starting the engine and stopping it less, and will probably be driven for more of it's miles 'at temperature' ie not cold.

The first point is important for getting a car that is clean inside and shows less signs of wear and tear. And with motorway miles, usually only one seat gets used, the drivers seat.

Problem is that as a car gets older Motorway Miles just gets used as an excuse for everything with 100k on it. 100k 3 year old cars, yes, it's normally motorway mileage.

But a 120k mile 99? Erm...

There's tonnes on autotrader sub 60k.

Well, when I say tonnes, I mean 20 or so fitting my spec

Accord, Petrol, Sub 60k, Manual

From the pics some of them show, some of them do appear mint inside - no serious carpet wear, seats look firm and in shape, pedal rubber intact, no trim hanging off. What else can you spot in pics to save wasting a trip out to see one?

Yea, all at a ridiculous premium price point. Seriously, dont waste your money when an Accord with 100k will be anything up to a grand less for the same age/model.

Set my limit to 3k though, so that's not ridiculous, seeing as that's my budget. :D

You really think that if, with all those criteria checked, and going from min 2k to max 3k, all the options that have been mentioned, and 20 or so come up, can't all be lemons can they?

And my pedal rubber looks brand new yet has never been replaced :p

Yeah I know, I'm not judging by one thing alone, am contributing lots of factors to what "looks" ok before I'm even considering travelling to see something.

You should try wearing shoes when you drive ;)

No, they can't, but lets say you find a nice Accord Executive with 50k on it, on a V plate.

For the same money, you could expect to find the same spec car with twice the mileage but.. on a 51, perhaps an 02 plate. Or you could stick with a V palte one and pay £2k instead of £3k...

as an example...

Is FSH worth paying for? I mean, FSH at a dealer doesn't guarantee the work done was decent work, does it?

Maaaaan, confused.com...

You actively looking to pay more for substantially lower than average mileage. FSH is a stone cold certain requirement.

Jap motors are reliable, but parts are typically more expensive than Ford etc.

You sound like a Focus 1.6 Zetec driver to me.

I've had Zetec's as hire cars and I didn't like them. On the motorway they felt twitchy and too light, wheras the astra's I've had felt much more solid and less twitchy (that was the SXi iirc).

So what makes me sound like a Zetec driver and not a honda driver? I'm curious!!

Oh, and I used to have a 1.1 fiesta and it was ALWAYS going wrong. It was a money pit. Been put off Ford for life I'm afraid.

For a start the age of those cars isnt apparent. And yes, FSH is worth paying for becuase its the only evidence you have that the car has been looked after.

Lower emissions, lower fuel consumption, cheaper parts costs, lower insurance (?), easier to park, etc.

Imo it's the defacto choice for someone who's wife doesn't care/know about the benefits of a better specced, larger, newer, better quality car.

If I were in your shoes, or rather had your budget, in addition to the Accord I would be looking carefully at well specced, 6 figure mileage <5 year old cars with FSH from a list of:-

Mondeo Mk3 / Mk3 TdCI
Peugeot 406 Hdi (French though)
Rover 75 diesel (No HGF worries, good diesel engine, class leading ride quality which ticks the comfort box).
Skoda Octavia Tdi

Research the service intervals on each model. If a car a has a 60k cambelt service interval, I'd buy a 70k car that had had the job done than a 50k car that needed it doing.

As Joe A-B, place more value in new tyres/new disks/pads/suspension bits etc than colour etc.

Bit late to this thread, but I have an Accord 2.0 and I'm happy with it :) Fuel consumption isn't outstanding, I average about 30-31mpg and that's *not* with constant "hard" driving, but a fair bit of town driving (at either ends of the motorway, on my commute, so I don't use it for very many short journeys)
It is fun to give it a bit of welly though :) Nice engine note.

It's a comfy car, drives pretty well, mine isn't the exec model and the only thing I'd really want from that spec is the climate control. It's been ultra reliable and I don't have any issue insuring it (i'm 20) :)
