Honda maybe returning to F1

Yep. And pretty much confirmed by McLaren passing the deadline for Mercedes engines in 2015+ without signing or approaching Ferrari or Renault.

Its a shame that McLaren are going to have to spend a year with Mercedes engines, I assume with them being sealed and McLaren kept out of the loop on their internals entirely?

I'm glad that this has happened too, as the whole new engine rules were designed to get car makers back into F1, and for a while it looked like nobody was going to bite. I still think the engine regulations are a retarded middle ground that is of no use to anyone, but at least they have achieved a bit of what they set out to do.

I wonder if this will spur Toyota to get interested?

It was thought they might but they decided against it.
I thought they would as well with McLaren making the engine for their new supercar. Perhaps they realised they just haven't got the expertise yet to do that.

Going to be difficult for Mercedes to enforce this though? McLaren have a binding contract and what's to stop McLaren opening their car up to have a look at the engine? Really it was obvious that McLaren would drop Mercedes engines once Mercedes went and bought the Brawn team.

Would be nice to see Ford back. Perhaps also VW could come in and brand their engines up. Won't happen as VW seem to want to take part in other sporting series and developing an F1 engine just for one or two teams who might not even be top race winning teams would be a waste of time, money and staff for VW.

The V6 is of no interest to the mass market end of the manufacturers scale, like Ford, VW, etc.

The I4 would have been, but Ferrari and Mercedes soon put that idea to bed.

I would say Nissan, but they are already getting plenty of exposure in endurance racing, and have got their fingers in with Infiniti.

PSA are likely to be in the same camp as VAG and Ford, the V6 is of no interest.

Wonder which other teams could potentially run with Honda power or if they will remain McLaren only.

Only team I think currently looking for an engine supplier is Marussia I think, but they need one for next year too. Saying that a lot can change in a year.

I read an article a few days back that said Force India and Sauber could be moving to Honda too.

Also suggested McLaren would be getting their engines for free. Possibly as a way to ensure a top team signed them? I very much doubt Honda could make it financially viable with only 1 customer.

It also listed the rumoured prices which ranged from $14m to $20m for a years supply, which kinda throws the whole "OMG the engines are going to be so expensive nobody will be able to afford them" argument out the window as current engine deals are around $10m a year anyway.

I think if they got those 3 teams it would be great for Honda, 1 'big' team and 2 upper midfielders.

I wonder if we will see more Japanese drivers getting a run in a FI or Sauber in the future then.
