Honda maybe returning to F1

Ok, scrap everything I said :p

Its Sauber and Lotus rumoured to be going to Honda. and the engines are between 15 and 23m Euros.

Honda, however, will surely subsidise its development costs with one or two customer deals, and Sauber and Lotus are thought to have already expressed interest.

...

Auto Motor und Sport said Renault wants to charge its customers between EUR 20 and EUR 23 million per season, while the Mercedes engine will cost 17-19 million.

Ferrari is reportedly offering the cheapest package, with the price tag between EUR 15 and EUR 17 million.

Ferrari I'd of called their bluff, but never mind.

Unfortunately the FIA were to scared too.

Probably because they couldn't be sure that it was actually a bluff, and Ferrari leaving would have certainly made a serious dent in F1's viability.

Anyone remember the Ferrari 637? In the run-up to the end of the turbo era at the close of the '88 season, the FIA was about to make the new engine regs lock everyone into building V8s*. Ferrari were unhappy about this, they wanted to build a V12 as that was what they were good at. So in 1986 they designed and built a car for the IndyCar series, the 637. The FIA realised that old Enzo was serious, thought hard for a moment about what F1 would be without Ferrari (admit it, even those of you that hate them still want them in the game!), and promptly grew a brain and changed the regulations.

* - a set of regulations that, by the way, would have meant that the Renault V10 that won so much would never have been born. Or the Honda V10 and V12 that brought Senna his second and third titles. Or the abject uselessness and sheer comedy of the Life W12 or Coloni-Subaru flat-12....

But flip it around, how would Ferrari cope without F1?

Its not a one way relationship. Ferrari needs F1 as much as F1 needs Ferrari.

They certainly need racing, and need to keep reasonably cordial with the FIA because of that. But they sure as hell don't need F1. After all, they can just rename the cars Lancias, or Alfas, or Maseratis. Takes the name out of F1 while keeping the options open for a quick return should the political climate change.

The problem with running an I4 engine was that you couldn't us it as a stressed member of the chassis, you would need some sort of supporting frame and the teams didn't want that. With a V6 it's wide enough that you can use it directly.

The best selling vehicle of all time has never raced.

Um...
