Honours system at uni

Here in Bournemouth the first year doesn't go towards your final year, but if like me you are doing a placement year for your 3rd year then it will count towards that, as you apply for that at the begining of the second year.

In Scotland you can leave Uni after 3years with an Ordinary degree ie Bsc BEng etc, for a honours degree you need to do a further year to get Bsc (hons). For a masters Msc you would need to do another year ie 5years

Yeah that's how it worked for me when I went to a Scottish university. I signed up for a four year BSc(Hons), but I got to the end of my third year and decided to quit. But since I had already passed three years I was give an ordinary degree. Personally I wouldn't recommend it, and should have just finished the final year.

Do first years ever count? Obviously you need to pass your first year, but do marks ever count?

I think some unis/courses may allocate a small percentage (10%) to the first year.

My best grades were in the 1st year so it's somewhat disappointing that it didn't count for anything :(

I think by definition if you have a classification (3rd, 1st, etc.) then you have honours.

At Brum, if you passed every module on the course you get the little Hons thing

AthlonTom BSc (Hons)

Thats strange as at Plymouth you have to pass (at least 40%) every module to even get the degree. If you don't pass a module you have to retake the exam in september, just before the next year, and if you still don't pass you have to retake the year.

In Manchester Uni you have to pass the final year project (dissertation) or they take away your Honours status even if you get something like 70% overall for other modules throughout 2nd and 3rd year :S

When I did my degree, we were awarded the BSc at the end of the course (assuming we passed) but were given the Hons if we had successfully completed and passed a dissertation. That was all there was to it...
Degree = Degree
Degree + Dissertation = Hons Degree.

Yeah, exactly the same here :)

Looking at all the different replies I think it is safe to say it varies by University.

It certainly does, it must make it slightly difficult evaluating candidates for a job if they come from various different universities.

For what it is worth in Abertay the degree classification is just based on the 4th year, if you left in 3rd year you walked away with an Ordinary degree. 4th year gives you the Honours and you then score on your best 6 subjects out of 8 e.g. 4 Bs and 2 Cs will give you a 2:1 overall. 5th year would be a Masters.

Have to complete the dissertation to get an honours I believe.

As said, it obviously varies by university but tbh I dont see how that can be true - not all degrees include a dissertation! (Mine doesnt.)

I thought below a 3rd was a fail?
At some universities it is. At Bristol they don't normally give ordinary degrees. If you don't get the grades to get at least a 3rd they just fail you under normal circumstances. At least that's how it is for computer science, it may even differ between departments.

the UWE system in a bit more detail

if you attain 360 credits or more (at least 100 of which must be at level 2 and 100 at level 3) you are awarded an honours degree.

70% = 1st
60 = 2:1
50 = 2:2
40 = 3rd

this is calculated by taking your 100 best level 3 credits, and 100 best level 2 credits. level 3 credits are weighted at 3x level 2 credits, and calculating the average.

should you attain less than 360 credits, but greater than 300, you attain an ordinary degree. i believe no grades are offered for these ordinary degrees.

so it's theoretically possible to get 350 credits at 80% and have a lesser qualifcation than someone who attained 360 credits at 40%
