How are energy drinks legal?

Just so you know, I bought a can of Monster at the weekend [the white one] and OH MY GOD that stuff is strong. By a quarter of the way through the can I was buzzing to ******* and back and this went on for about three-four hours. I couldn't even finish the can and ended up pouring the last part down the sink.

I'm amazed that these are sold in normal shops. How are they legal, the effect is so intense. Do people drive after drinking these things? Do people give them to kids? I'm absolutely stunned by how strong the effect was. It can't be good for you. What's worse is that I hear people get addicted to them.

Never drunk any of them, just not interested as they are usually stacked with sugar and I dont have anything with caffeine in

Seen loads of varieties being consumed over the years, typically first thing in the morning. No idea how people can stomach the flavour of them as even the smell from several feet away is hideous.

I'm a fan of the Monster "Ultra" range (the sugar free ones), but only really in the sense of an occasional treat drink for the flavour. I don't get much of an energetic effect from them; certainly no buzzing or jitters etc.
Then again, I'm pretty much the same with coffee. All it really does is make me want to poop.

You could ask the same question about alcohol :p

Certainly wouldn't want to drink them on a regular basis, but can be handy on occasion for a quick hit. Most of the time I'd rather just have an espresso - all the caffeine, none of the needing to go to the toilet 15 times

There are people at work who'll get through like 3-4 cans on a shift - the bigger size cans at that!

Personally they don't do anything for me - except sometimes make my stomach feel a little jittery depending on brand. Caffeine is something I really need to kick as it provides me no benefit in terms of energy or staying awake, a cup of tea gives a shorter period of more intense focus/reactions but that lasts about 30 minutes tops and I don't get that from energy drinks, meanwhile I get a nasty headache if I go more than about 16 hours without caffeine :(

Not allowed to sell them to under 16's anymore.

I tend to drink a red bull on a very rare occasion now of when I am undertaking long drive for work and am tired and need a boost.
When I used to work in Mcd's post uni doing the 10pm starts or 4am starts, I would drink on average between 1-3 red bulls or 1-2 relentless' per day to make it through, did that solid for around a year. Did terrible terrible things to my body.
It took me absolutely ages to ween myself off of them and yes I should stop drinking them entirely and when I did kick the habit, I ended up kicking most fizzy drinks also, so I barely touch sugary drinks these days, unless its in a pick me up sort of style.

They have their benefits and are needed from time to time for those who do not rely on tea or coffee, like myself.

If anyone is preparing themselves to come off of them, honestly you have no idea how tired and out of energy you are going to feel, its going to suck but get yourself off of them and then spend a night or 2 a week in the gym, your energy levels will come back.

They're no worse than coffee. I don't really like the big can ones like Monster and Relentless but I don't mind the occasional Red Bull. I say occasional, I haven't had one in a number of years but as far as energy drinks go, they're the least offensive.

I just much rather have a good coffee. If I want caffeine I may as well take it properly.
