How broken is windows update for W7 users?

I have two machines at home, one updates fast, one is very slow. I tried all the recommended things to make the slow machine faster (as it used to be) and in the end the only thing is to wait a very long time. Disable the machine going to sleep, run update, wait an hour, download/install updates, wait another hour for that to happen.

There just seems to be no rhyme of reason why one machine is normal and one is slow, as they are both patched to the same level, and on the same version of windows.

Last months updates, i decided to leave until a few days later, as i got sick of waiting an age to check and find, then another to down and install, thought if i gave it a few days, it might be better, but nope.

The day after last months, it popped up saying it had found them when i turned my PC on, so i thought right, if they are there found, i may as well down and install em, so set it away, and it just sat on 0% downloaded for an age, stopped, started a few times, but just wouldn't have it, so in the end i decided to write them down, and just get them manually from the dowload centre, but as soon as id got the last one down, it popped up again saying they were ready to be installed, it had finally downed them, so i just installed them.

This month, same as usual, checking for an age, so gave up, eventually popped up saying it had found them, so i could down them, went to down them, a no go, 0% downloaded, but seen as i was doing nothing, i just left it for about 2hrs or so, and just watched Tv, when i checked it again, still nothing downed, still 0%, so said **** it, stopped it, im gona get em manually again, and lo and behold, just as id got the last one down, i thought i'll give it a quick check, see if it will do em, if not, i'll just install them manually, and as soon as i brought the Win update up, it was just about finished downing them, was on 99%, then popped up they were ready to be installed, so i downed em manually again, for nothing.

Its odd, as thats twice now, that ive got them down manually, and win update has suddenly kicked in, and downloaded them lol, seems like me getting them all manually from the download centre, is triggering it into life :D

I know some say their CPU usage rockets as well, but mine doesn't, it just hovers around 8%, no matter how long i leave it checking/trying to down for.

I still say they are knobbling it to get you on Win 10, as when its not a patch tuesday and i do a check, for the Defender updates etc..., it checks/finds/downs and installs, in the blink of a bloody eye :p

A clean install?

1) Disconnect the network cable
2) Install Windows 7 with SP1
3) Install KB3020369
4) Install KB3161608
5) Reboot
6) Connect the network cable
7) Scan for updates

Took my single core virtual machine five minutes to find the initial batch.

I did try those files but they didn't work for me but I may not have removed the network cable.

I have found this and it did worked for me today.

I couldn't understand or follow the instructions so I just downloaded the six files and set pc to never load and did a restart. I installed the six files manually one by one, ignore the restart message until all are done.
I restarted the pc and set it to download but let me choose to install.
I have slow connection so just went for important updates first.
Within 5mins it found the updates.

The process KIA described worked for me

I also added the rollups patch
AMD64-all-windows6.1-kb3125574 (this was how 64 bit windows was named)
as listed earlier in thread, which took it to June 2016, not seen any nagware yet either. (needed to make sure I burned the iso to a usb for uefi install too - the windows 7 iso->usb i installed initially used the old style mbr system)

... just sorting out the drivers now - the difficult part ?

Can't get mine working either.

Did a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1 the other day, haven't been able to install any updates yet.

I've tried using the standalone installers, but they just stay on the "Searching for updates..." bit even with the network cable unplugged.

It's strange also because from time to time, I'll get the new updates available pop up but when I click it, it's as if it's never checked for updates with the red border in Windows Update.

Ugh W7 update is a nightmare. My HTPC was Windows Server 2012 and I wanted to get Win 10 on it before the upgrade expired.

Gave up trying to use windows update. Just did one round of WSUSoffline, then disabled the windows update service, and kicked off the Win 10 upgrade process.

You need to stop the update service first or it messes up the Win 10 install.

Well would you believe it, i got this months updates down and installed fine.

Popped up earlier on saying the updates were there, but i had to go out, so with the ***** on i have with them (not downloading for hrs, so having to write them down to get manually), i just left them until i got back.

Come back, wrote them down to get manually, thought right, i'll give em a quick try, see if they'll down, if not, i'll just get em manually, like i have been doing for the past couple of months or so, but as soon as clicked Install Updates, they started downing straight away, bloody flew down and installed in no time.

Its funny that, how its suddenly now worked, after all those months of being buggered, and the free Windows 10 upgrade offer has just finished.

My wife's PC updated the other days with no issues....but when I was on win7 I had a terrible time with updates I had to go into BIOS and shut off secure boot and that seemed to solve the issue...but using win10 I've had no issues at all ...so far , but I soon have to update my Daughters win7 PC ...so I shall have my fingers crossed .

Sorry I should also say that even after shutting off secure boot ..I still had some issues with updates...so this is why I went over to windows10 in the first place .

I've had absolutely no updates for what feels like months and then on the day when the update to Windows 10 finally expires I get a shedload of updates suddenly appearing and half of them, literally, are upgrade-you-to-windows-10 updates.

Coincidence? I think not.

I have had no problems at all updating my laptop this month (makes a pleasant change). It picked up this months updates within a few minutes!!

Windows Update is now completely broken for me.

During the Win 10 promotion, I didn't get notifications to tell me if there were any updates available; I had to run Windows Update manually to check if there were updates. When there were updates, they downloaded and installed fine.

After the promotion ended, I started to get notifications that updates were available again. Unfortunately, if I tell it to download any updates now, Windows Update just gets stuck and sits there telling me "downloading 0kb 0%".

Also, I have a 'Svchost.exe (netsvcs)' service running which takes approx 12% of my CPU usage for the entire time Windows is running. I have had to completely disable Windows Update to get my CPU usage back to normal.
