How can three people drown in this pool ?

It is more of an American stereotype but there is some truth to it and some rather tragic consequences - one non/weak swimmer getting into trouble and other non/weak swimmers trying to help can be a disaster:

When 15-year-old DeKendrix Warner accidentally stepped into deeper water while wading in the Red River in Shreveport, he panicked.

JaTavious Warner, 17, Takeitha Warner, 13, JaMarcus Warner, 14, Litrelle Stewart, 18, Latevin Stewart, 15, and LaDarius Stewart, 17, rushed to help him and each other.

None of them could swim. All six drowned. DeKendrix was rescued by a passer-by.

A wood craftsman sees a log floating in the river that he wants to create a furniture or whatever out of, he asks his assistant to jump in and retrieve it, turns out there were serious currents and whirlpools working under the water, the assistant is getting sucked under, frantically trying to stay above the surface. The first guy jumps in, swims over to him and the inevitable happens, he grabs him and ends up pulling him under, all happens in a couple of minutes if that.

I've seen quite a few drownings on YouTube. Horrible stuff.

ffs...I thought log was a typo for dog!

Not sure a drowning is something I'd want to watch TBH!

A drowning person does not act logically.

Thanks for reminding me of Hurghada 2010 :(
I'd gone off snorkeling when I got scared, took in a load of water and then spent what was an eternity trying not to drown.
I was too far from the boat to shout and really thought my life was over.
I was just about to give up when I realised I could float for England, so calmly got in a cross position, floated to the surface and stayed in that position until I recovered.

This year I jumped in an outside rooftop pool in Benidorm and if it wasn't for the fact that my feet were on the ground I might not have got out because it was that cold.

IF swimming certificates exist for the kids, then this proves they can swim, however an absence of swimming certificates in no way proves they can't

My 84 year old Mum died exactly one week ago and one of the things we found was her swimming certificate :)
Funnily enough I don't think it's kept on an International Swimming Certificate database though.

Who has ever read the instructions next to the pool?

The only instructions I read are on Car Parks. If somebody is standing next to me I verify the instructions with them.

People are kind of missing the point, even if they could swim, cold water shock can still kill them.
I don't quite know how that could be the cause given the location and ambiant temperature though? Maybe I'm being a bit naive but I'm speaking as one who fell through the ice on a canal once and my immediate urge/instinct was to get out ASAP. Furthermore the water was that cold-only realised when leaving, that my body felt as though it was on fire when I got back on to the path. I've suffered cold shock many a time and I'm asthmatic, it it hasn't killed me? If all three victims had a dodgy heart then maybe , but it's hard to tell from hearsay.

Cold shock doesn't kill you directly, it's the panic that ends up drowning you, especially if you're a weak swimmer, but even competent swimmers can drown as a result of it. And it was seemingly cold enough for it, water temperatures have seemingly been about 10degC so cold enough to cause it.

I can can only speak for me and maybe I was just lucky or not typical. It will be interesting to see the outcome regardless.

Was that the guy trying to retrieve the log and the older guy jumps in tries to rescue him and he pulls him under, there are a few of those on YouTube.

Happens so fast.

This sounds like a case of negligence on both sides, the hotel for not having buoys, grapplers, ropes, lifeguards and the family for letting their daughter into pool without armbands and not being able to swim well.
Yep the driftwood one. Terrible.

You really don't do well with your eyes do you? Clearly visible in the photos are life rings with ropes.

Life guards are only required on pools above a certain size.

I was quite a strong swimmer in my youth, but it's still a hell of a shock when the floor of a pool suddenly disappears from under you rather than a gradual slope.
Hopefully the truth will come out eventually, I too thought maybe the pump had sucked the girl in, and the others died trying to rescue her.

It is very strange.

The whole pump ‘sucking’ thing - I mean, how seriously strong would that need to be to keep someone pinned down (even a child)? Is that even possible?!

Yes. I dealt with a case where the suction pulled the innards out of a child.
