How did you get your job?

I was made redundent from the job I had from leaving school (16ish years) at the end of November last year. I spent a lot of time looking at job websites, agency websites, vacancy sections of companies I fancied working for, plus local newspapers and jobcentreplus website.

I saw the job that I am doing now advertised on several agency websites, so I initially applied through them, only to be told I was not suited, which was a joke, as it was basically the same job I had been doing, only with slightly different equipment. Then I went to the companies website, and emailed my CV, as well as sending a written application by post. I received a letter from the company telling me I was not suited, which made me feel pretty gutted, although by this time I had already been offered another job. Then about 3 weeks before I was due to start the other job, I had an email inviting me for an interview, and the rest is history...

Over a weekend I had decided to quit Uni. I did the paperwork and what not on Monday, moved back to my parents house in Tuesday. On Thursday I went to a job agency to get some temporary work just to get some cash coming in.

I started a job on Monday working in the warehouse. Within 3 months I was working in the IT Department, 6 years later I'm the IT Director.

Applied for a job in customer services failed the competency test. Was convinced that it was nerves, phoned them back when I got the letter of rejection pleading with them to re-assess me as it was nerves.

Got invited back a week later passed the test and got interviewed for a different job higher grade and higher salary. Got took on for that and been here for the last six years :D

I came recommended into my current job through various contacts I have round the banks in the city. It helped being a contractor to a major banking software house. I’ve been quite lucky as I’ve always got jobs this way over the past 10 years or so.

Originally, my first job in IT was through a local paper, which advertised for a trainee programmer, with a degree. I had some experience they were looking for but not the degree. In fact I didn’t even have an O level!

My mum said go for it and I did. I was so surprised that out 20 or so people, I got the job and over Uni graduates too. LOL! It turned out that the commercial experience was more valuable to them than just having the theory.

At was 17, I was on 7.5k PA as a trainee. Remembering too that this was in 1985 so about a century ago..

Had an interview with a Career helper at connexions.

They put me on file.

6months later got a call saying that they have found me an interview.

Went along, 2 days before christmas got a call saying i got the job.

Still there after 1 year and 3 months :)
