How do drivers in <Your Town Here> React to Filtering?

Overall it does not bother me and I try to leave a gap. On the odd occasion when I have not left a gap for whatever reason I will usually move over when I see them.

The only issue I have with bikers is when they undertake on Motorways, almost knocked one off when they did that once, fortunately I use my mirrors (and it's not limited to motorcyclists who do that anyway, they are just harder to see, being smaller and faster and all).

My route to/from work involves filtering past literally hundreds of cars every day, and there are several sections after traffic lights where I'll constantly get stuck behind someone doing 40mph in a 60 zone, with limited opportunities to overtake. Round here no-one, and I mean no-one drives at the speed limit in NSL sections, let along over it :p 40mph in a 60mph? Yep. 50mph in the outside lane on a 70mph DC? Oh yes.

Granted, there are certain lights where there's normally only 2-3 cars in front and sometimes I won't bother filtering past them, but most of the time if there's time (knowing the light sequences) and space I'm to the front, and ready to go.

This is a normal ride to work for me, but you'll see I don't always filter to the front ;)

That CB SF sounds fantastic. Nice bike.

As a car driver, I want bikes in front of me and long gone into the distance so I no longer have to be careful with what they might be about to do, so if one wants to get past, I'll move over as much as possible. This is usually accompanied by a thank you hand raise from the biker and off they go.

Only annoyance with filtering is if a bike filters into my breaking gap in front as traffic begins to stop, I have to brake much harder. I notice most people around here, generally are quite nice to bikers and behave similarly to me.

That's what a lot of car drivers don't think about, we'll be in their lives for literally a few seconds sometimes. At the front of a set of lights I'll be up to the 40mph limit before the car behind is doing 10mph.

On the subject of bikes filtering/overtaking into the gap in front, the best thing to do is leave a bigger gap. There's nothing worse than there being plenty of time/room to overtake a single car in a line of 3-4, but that car being 10ft behind the car in front, forcing the biker to either squeeze into the gap or go for a much riskier 2 car overtake. If drivers left the proper 2 second gap that's plenty of room to slot into.

When filtering on tight roads where opposite traffic means I have to stop, I'm always looking for the next gap that I can stop in if something comes the other way, we'd rather not have to force our way in. :)

In these cases I usually either wait until there's enough clear room to shoot past the lot or just don't bother.

In terms of making progress I rarely find it worth it unless I can pass the whole block of traffic and a lot of the time I just can't be bothered leapfrogging my way up.

One of my little pleasures is looking in my wing mirror at the tiny little dot that the car turns in to when you leave it at the lights. :D

I honestly cannot understand any car driver that gets upset by a biker pulling in front of him at the lights when in about 3 seconds they're out of sight.

Most of ^those tend to be the ones that are just jealous of how fast bikes can go and often try to race.
I've always been advised to pull forward of the A-Pillar at the front of lights, but never in front of the lead car, regardless of whether there's a bicycle bay or not, as crossing the white line is illegal anyway.
The rest are all wondering, like me, what the point of passing those few cars is, at times when the road ahead past the lights is *not* clear for you to blaze away.

If it's busy tuther side of the lights then I'm in chill mode so just slip in wherever it's easy/convenient & make progress as & when I can. I'm so much more chilled when I ride my bike compared to when I'm driving my car which I put down to me knowing that I will make progress sooner rather than later anyways so why bother getting stressed about a small delay.

Because you can? Even if the area in front of the lights isn't clear, you can still filter your way through it, I filter all the time apart from a mini roundabout as it's not safe to do so.

I like to do it on the back wheel, dressed in nothing more than the sandwich board Bruce Willis wore in die hard with a vengeance.
