Hi there, :) being from the older generation I've never really trusted buying by credit or debit card over the Internet. Although after comparing online prices with shop, I'm beginning to realise how many cost savings I'm missing.

Can someone please inform what I need to do to buy safe online?

Thanks

Just use a reputable website and dont worry because if your card gets frauded you can get it back through the bank.

Ive shopped online for over 10 years and never had an issue once.

Common sense really pal. If the websites are professional looking, not ridiculously cheap (too good to be true) then you should be fine.

A very basic thing to check for is that the URL begins with 'https://' when on any payment pages.

It is very simple. Stick to tried and trusted websites only. If it looks too cheap to be true it it.

Google shopping is a good thing to use as you can instantly see the user ratings of a store.

Like this for instance

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=78...pw.r_qf.&fp=41008881e9f59052&biw=1920&bih=965

Type the product in and see how many stars the retailers has (as wel l as the price, of course). :)

(I did deliberately pick a product OcUK only sells as otherwise I may show competitors)

Order a card reader from your bank, Natwest do one if you're with them.

Pretty much like a point of sale card reader in a retail store, you just use it at home for added security. They are usually free too.

Make sure you stick to trusted websites as mentioned above. Perform regular virus/spyware scans to make sure your pc is secure.

Beyond that, you'll just have to rely on some common sense, which a lot of folk are missing sadly!

buying on the internet is safer than buying over the phone imo.

use a credit card if you are concerned - the credit card act protects you from everything.

All of the above and if you want added security use a credit card, they have better buyer protection than a debit card although Visa debit cards are starting to offer similar protection.

With my natwest online account I have to input a couple of letters from my online account password before they authorize the transaction.

Its always been a pain in the money maker for me, but if you want extra protection, I suppose its good.

I've never had any issues until a couple of weeks ago when my paypal account was hacked.
Luckily i get emails on my phone so knew about it straight away. Phoned paypal but couldn't change password at first as the scammers were logging in aswell so it was kicking me out.

All sorted very quick with paypal. Think I got a refund on one of the purchases before it was actually taken from my account.

Just pay by credit card and your covered. Pay paypal by credit card and be doubly covered

Do be sure to check with your bank/credit provider on what is covered.

At a minimum, you're protected by the Consumer Credit Act on all credit card purchases between £100-30,000. This does not apply to debit cards, although Visa and Mastercard Debit cards are protected by the Debit Chargeback scheme.

That said, I believe that most banks/credit providers go beyond the minimum requirements and guarantee their cards for any and all online transactions.

open a second "current account" for online purchases and just use internet banking to transfer money between your accounts which is instant

I have one account for internet purchases and another for direct debits

Thanks guys for your helpful & speedy replies, sounds like you guys don't worry @ all about buying online. I'm going to check with my bank and give it a try.

@ valve90210 LMAO but I'll give your idea a miss. :D

Thanks again folks :)

I probably don't worry enough when buying online. I've entered my details into some seriously dodgy looking websites but nothing bad happened thus far..

4 rules
- always use a credit card (if money is stolen it's the banks money not yours)
- always check your credit card statement before you pay it off each month
- only buy from retailers you know and trust
- always opt out of 'save my payment details' functionality (there are arguments against this, but in my expert opinion it's the right advice)

to find the best deal I use google shopping, it's not perfect but it's easy to find someone reputable with a decent price including delivery costs.
