How do I open my Coconut?

That's quite worrying given your choice of profession - you don't happen to work for a courier do you? :p

I tend to find either the claws from a hammer to crack the nut all the way round, or one of the larger flat screw drivers we've got in the garage makes short work of opening a coconut without much mess (the trick is to hit it hard enough to just crack it, then repeat all the way round).

This.

After piercing it to get the milk out turn it on its side and strike across the middle with the back of a large knife, turn and repeat until it splits. You'll get a relatively neat edge this way and none of the brown stuff on the nice clean white cocoguts. :)
 
Like i did in thailand. a sharp rock

All of a coconut can be used. The outside when dry is great kindling for fire, the milk is nice and the inside is better. Look for the holes and grind one out to get milk then crack it on a sharp rock

im just wondering who brought you the coconut for your birthday, id send them back to get you something decent!.. or at least something you could open easier! :P
 
For future reference, never try to open a coconut with a ball pein hammer like I did. I gave it a ruddy great whack, it opened slightly and closed on the pad of my thumb, leaving a huge blood blister. I may be the only person ever to have been bitten by a coconut.
