How do You Apply the Handbrake?

I've always pressed the button in - ever since being told off by my driving instructor over 6 years ago when I didn't!

the ratchet in the rear hub cassette (admittedly cheaper ones) go all the time without hitting objects , the same sorta ratchet a socket and handrake uses

I have never seen a hub ratchet go. They also take far more abuse than a handbrake. A handbrake isn't jumped of ramps and hit boulders at 30mph.

indeed, I have never seen a failed bike freewheel only heard of it in very old ones. So going on the fact that a bike freewheel will go through probably billions of clicks and a car handbrake will only go through a few thousand at best, and the handbrake ratchet being significantly larger and less fragile, I don't think wear is an issue.
Fwiw I have never even heard of a handbrake ratchet failure, ever.

I always press the button as well,I hate hearing that grinding ratchet sound !

I press the button now because it is a rather loud ratchet and "clangy" in my car. I never used to press the button before this car though.

I teach my pupils to push the button then lift and release when its applied.

Mainly because with all the stop start we can do and using the handbrake PROPERLY then its irritating as hell ratcheting all the time. Also it lets them feel how hard the handbrake is applied.

But you don't tell them it'll break the ratchet if you don't press in the button, right?

No, I tell them the truth, It's just plain irritating listening to it all day!

I think once upon a time it may well have been posible to damage the ratchet when they were made out of soft steel etc but not these days to my knowlege.

I tend to just pull the handbrake up. It only goes up two clicks anyway.

The car is also left in gear if its out on the drive (due to the slope) however I don't bother putting it in gear in the garage as its not on a slope.

...when going round a tight corner in 2nd, then apply some opposite lock to correct the car

On my old e38 7 Series, you stood firmly on the parking lever,found above & to the left of where you'd expect to find a clutch pedal on non-automatics.

Otherwise, I tend to press the button / lift collar etc.

New mercedes are like your old e38 nowadays. Pedal in left corner higher than clutch.

I press the button because when you're doing a handbrake turn followed by a slide you need to disengage the handbrake in a fluid motion.

I always push the button in then pull it up as that is what i was taught to do and its just habit now. I don't think it matters either way.

The button is to release the rachet so you can take the handbreak off .
