How do you decide how to modify your car?

I've missed the thread but I assume that you're getting a Puma?

If so then sort the brakes first, they're abosolutely dire as standard. Apart from that it's just down to personal preference. The arch gap on Pumas is huge so I'd probably suggest getting it lowered but be careful what kit you choose as it would be a real shame to ruin the superb handling of the car with some cheap set of springs.

Duke - the induction kit, does it sound much nicer? I love the noise it makes at about 4.5k rpm, and would like to make that louder, without being deafened and loosing power ;)
It sounds very throaty when pushed :) If you drive 'normal' it will sound like stock, but if you plant your foot, it sounds awesome.

I can email you a small video my mate took on his phone which gives you the idea, if you wish :)

Well....with the new one.....

"Ok, it's got a 70BHP engine. Right. New engine then. A 2 litre 16 valve, that'll do. But oh, it's front wheel drive. No matter, new gearbox, rear drive-axle. Damn, suspensions a bit saggy. Right, Spax dampers & uprated springs......."

So now it's going to be :

"Well, steerings' a bit off - so some ST uprated rack mounts, solid coupling, 4 new tyres, 4 wheel laser alignment. Great! Now, more power - I'll go for fully electronic dizzyless ignition, 4 bike carbs on custom manifold, kenlowe cooling fan, ah yes!"

Now I need to work on brakes and safety, too! :o

Job done :D

oh right...

on the one i bought the RAC check said the brakes needed attention.. felt like warped discs, so I requested new discs, pads and fluid as part of the pre sale service (as well as it having a full service) .. if this doesnt sort it out and its still not great ill look into a decent brake setup.

suspension wise, if I do go for anything, dont worry, ti wont be cheap springs :) im not going to destroy a car with whats described as near perfect handling by getting some halfords own springs ;)

That's reminded me, I swear I saw your other halfs Puma down here yesterday, what was the reg?

Have you got a pic of it again, it had that little spoiler, was a slightly diff colour and swear the alloys were the same (aftermarket ones right?) :)

I had 2 sets of warped disks on the Puma, maybe they're just prone to it or something?

Brakes should be first, uprated pads, lines and fluid...

Tyres/Wheels can go here or before brakes...

Suspension next...

I'll agree with this.

As I've found out... using crap tyres with uprated brakes/suspension isn't going to help anything.

Regarding the induction kit, they sound awesome. My car sounded nice without but with it on it just growles more. It really does sound good. Also, as previously said, you can drive without hearing a peep from it when your folks are in the car only hearing it when you plant and boy does it sing!

For me I went:

Refurb the brakes: new pipes, hoses, calipers, pads, shoes, disks, fluid.

new suspension: New 330lb front springs, spax dampers all round, polybush

Now I'm retrimming the interior: new carpets, MX-5 seats, new panels, vinyl, redesign of the dashboard, new steering column, some electrics added.

Next: stage II engine rebuild, new diff, prop shaft rebalance

Then... probably more brake work, maybe some form of servo, or vented conversion with new pads, depending on how effective they still are.

Then EFI?

It sounds way better than stock.. I'll try to get a better recording, if possible.. even so you should get one anyway :D

any idea which induction kit/airbox setup offers the best performance increase? pumabuild just swap for a K&N panel filter
They are all very close.. you are only really talking 1-2bhp realisically. I have the Pipercross Induction Kit which is about £80.. but I've heard good things from K&N too. AFAIK a panel filter won't give as much noise, but is a lot easier to fit.

Put a set on the Clio about two hours ago :)

Only quickly tested them driving up the road and back and the light given off was a very clear light, looked good.

Only went for them as in Halfords, unless buying their cheapo ones, it was going to cost £22 PER BULB for my fitment :(

powerbulbs had them for 23 a pair.

Plus if you order from powerbulbs you get some bluevision sidelights free, plus google for a discount code and you get 10% off :P
