How does Lenny Henry get laughs?

I'm just watching Live At The Appollo and unfunny Henry is on. Is he the master of sympathy laughs because he's not remotely funny? Or are people just laughing at his accent.

It's always blah blah blah Jamaican accent, Jamaican accent blah blah blah. Don't mess with the big bad jamaican woman.

Lenny Henry passed his sell by date back in 1982. The only thing that keeps him going are stupid white people that think he must be funny because he gets himself on the BBC.

Incidently one of my friends was a waiter at restaurant in London and Lenny Henry and Dawn French came in. He said Lenny Henry was complete impolite ignorant **** and didn't smile or say thank you once all night. Totaly different to the persona he gives on TV that he's a friendly guy. He said Dawn French was very polite though.

Am I missing something or did you just spell that wrong?

Ed and Andy were pretty good tonight, although Andy was recycling some of his MTW jokes. I suppose because Ed isn't on there as much you don't hear all of his so it stays fresh/

Dara Ó Briain.
Michael McIntyre.
Eddie Izzard.
Lee Evans.
Ross Noble.
Rhod Gilbert.
Tommy Cooper.

Are Funny.

Lenny Henry is not funny.

I think he was funny on Tiswas once, after that I think people just thought he was funny because of his racial background and didn't want to let the guy know that he was no Richard Pryor. He obviously never got the message.

just finished watching tonights live at the apollo on iplayer.

Lenny Henry, same old jokes, add some variety man.
Didn't think much of Andy Parsons, Ed Byrne was on good form though.

Looking forward to next week with Russell Howard tbh, loved his dvd and appearances on mock the week.

On the one hand, thanks for the heads-up :)

On the other hand, Lenny Henry and Andy Parsons :(

Thank probably-no-god Ed Byrne was in top form.

EDIT: And Russell Howard next week? Oh dear.

Lenny used to get a laugh from me about 10 years ago but his jokes haven't evolved much from then, in fact he seems to of gone backwards tbh. Lee evans f.t.w

I thought Lenny Henry was funny when i was like 7 and he did red nose day.. now I watch him he's so bad. Like someone else said, someone must have forgot to tell him he's no Richard Pryor

Ed Byrne was excellent, although it was a pity - the way I perceived it at least - he got a shorter slot on stage than the other two. Andy Parsons was disappointing - nowhere near as good as he is on MTW or when I've seen him at the Comedy Store ...

Shola Ameobi, and Lenny Henry, two people that make me sad, how the hell can both make such a good living without the tinniest amount of talent at the jobs they are paid for.

AS others have said, I thought Henry was funny when I was, basically under 10, but even then I far from found him fantastic nor everything he did funny, I found some of his stuff funny and some was cringe worthy 20 years ago. I don't even think what he did back then was original, he's just done the same schtick for so long everyone thinks he was the first person to ever come up with his act.

I find French just as cringeworthy, the xmas special for Vicar of Dibley was just bile inducing crap. As was all but maybe 1 joke in the entire series. Only fools and horses new stuff and specials. Comedy has to be newer and fresher or it will be bad, but you get all these people write stuff that might have seems appropriate and semi original 20 years ago but bomb's now. You can only hear the best joke in the world so many times before you find it boring and dull, and they never had nearly the best jokes.

Thing is most 'new' funny comedy is often offensive and not political correct and prefroming such comedy won't keep you on the BBC gravy train as Brand and Ross found out.

I've never, ever found Lenny Henry amusing. His brand of humour is below even father-in-law level.

It's so not funny however you look at it. Why do people laugh at him?
