I been a forum lurker for a while now recently signed up to pick your brains etc..
So yea finally managed to get the misses to agree on me getting a gaming machine ! :D

Obviously i have 0 expirience with it all  So how does this look:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Asus Crosshair III Formula AMD 790FX (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition 3.40GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail

Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler (Socket LGA775/1156
/1366/AM2/AM3)

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)

OCZ Gold Low Voltage 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3G1600lV4GK)

XFX ATI Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD3000HLFS)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3500418AS)

Pioneer DVR-S18L 22x DVD±RW SATA Labelflash ReWriter - Black (Retail)

Lian Li Silent Force 650w Modular Power Supply

Lian Li PC-P50R Armoursuit Midi Tower Case - Black/Red

Hit my max limit: £1,695.47
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Will that motherboard fit the case?
I reserached that the ATI 5970 fits but can anyone confirm this ?
Will the power supply fit my needs ? *with upgrades in future?*

Sorry for all the questions but i want to get this right first time...

If you spot anything i can save a few pounds on do share ;)
Or even swap around for better performance...

Cheers guys !

+1
SSD instead of velociraptor (For OS and favourite apps)
1 x 5870 for now and if you feel you need the extra grunt add another later.
open debate on PSU, but the one you chose would be ok or use the money saved on 5970 and get a 750 or 850w if you are determined to stay with Lian Li

do you need a monitor? keyboard mouse or operating system?

Nah i can make do with my keyboard and mouse there not top line stuff but they do there job...

Windows 7 is included in the price up there

im toying with the idea of a new monitor was looking at:
BenQ G2420HDB 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor [9H.L3ALB.QPE]

Staying AMD

Staying with the case because i will enjoy it for years best looking case Ocuk excluding the Zalman Gt900 *way to expensive*

Im unsure about the Ssd because there so expensive for the amount of storage *windows boot's 30 sec faster does not concern me*

Flexable on the GFX card *only just if i did get the 5970 its lasting me*

im allready over what i would like to spend

I dont see any answers if this is a good system spec or not !?

What is your budget?

I maybe able to come up with an AMD spec which would fit into what your willing to spend!! :)

not a good spec for your budget i don't think.... i would go I7 as it beats AM3 at this moment in time from what i have experienced first hand today

I7 is easily doable in your budget and i would go for 5870 GPU :) if you can get a 5970 and I7 then do that

Sweet jesus!

That is sooo totally overkill I don't even know where to start! :p

Cat, look after this guy, you could slash that budget in half without even trying and he wouldn't even notice the difference in usage!

If he's desperate to part company with his savings (tax reasons, insanity, whatever!) spec him up with SSD's, multi-monitor eyefinity etc!

£1,500 -600 is budget im over by 95

I see equall amount of post regard the i7 a waste of money as i do the 5970 at the moment...but at least with the 5970 it will last longer im only going to have to change again shortly if i go with a lower card
and any how im getting the lani li case and its got an AMD logo on it :D

I would probably go with a single HD5870 ATM and and add another when the prices drop. An HD5870 will max out any game at 1920X1200 currently:

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2009/09/22/amds_ati_radeon_hd_5870_video_card_review/8

A pair would be faster than an HD5970 anyway as the GPUs in the HD5970 have to be down-clocked so they can fit on a single GPU!

Also the HD5970 is rarer as a Moose with common sense ATM!!

This is what I would look:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 ~ £144

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-253-AM

Asus Crosshair III Formula ~ £144

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-339-AS

4GB 1600MHZ DDR3 ~ £83

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-026-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

Lian Li PC-P50R ~ £169

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-159-LL

A very expensive case IMHO!!

HD5870 1GB ~ £316

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-009-C3

Corsair TX850W ~ £97

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-013-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

This PSU has got a decent review form Jonnyguru.

Samsung F3 1TB ~ £70

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-082-SA

Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB ~ £198

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-004-IN

Alternatively swap in the Raptor if you want to but I would save your money and get another F3 as this would be fast enough!

SATA DVD rewriter ~ £18

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-038-OT&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=

BenQ G2420HDB ~ £143

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-032-BQ&groupid=17&catid=510&subcat=

The total comes to around £1382 excluding postage.

I have not included an aftermarket cooler in the build.

You will also need to include a copy of an OS too in the build!!

if you really wanted to you could stick a 2nd 5870 in there beating the performance on a 5970 apparently :)

have fun

aye thanks for the help people :)

@Cat ye i do agree the Lani Li case is expensive but i really dont like any of the other cases * i was originally trying to fit in a zalaman case*

If you like the case go with it!! It should last a long time so even though it is expensive it probably is a better investment than many other computer parts TBH!!

You could also save money buy getting a Samsung F3 500GB as a boot drive. The Raptor will be faster but I don't think it is worth so much. The same applies to the SSD.

This review of the Samsung F3 1TB is very useful to read:

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/storage/2009/10/06/samsung-spinpoint-f3-1tb-review/1

Also I would also consider the following modular PSU too:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-115-AN&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

Jonnyguru has given the PSU a very good review:

Blindfaith, I dont know how to tell you this but your being brainwashed!

I'm all for a little retail therapy but your seriously just throwing your money away! :(

Feel free to ignore me but man unless your a professional Multi-Media producer you have no reason at all to be spending that much money on a core i7! :D

Seriously!
