how far can cats jump from?

hi guys,

we have 2 kittens who are now 4 months old... and i'm a bit worried cuz one of them just jumped from our bedroom (2nd story) window down to the patio

we've been very careful with windows and the like since we had them at 9 weeks, but guard let down just once and he bloody goes and jumps :eek:

he seems fine, a bit shaky and just wants to be picked up, but he doesn't seem damaged... surely they shouldn't be able to jump that bleedin far he's only little(ish)

am i worrying for nothing?

it is a little high, try not to let them do it, especially when they are so young.

Darwin rules !

Purify the cat gene pool - leave the windows open, then in future years people won't have to worry as kittens will either have developed wings or more common sense !

My wife's cat when young jumped from a third story window onto a concrete courtyard.

He was fine.

I don't think he will do it again as cats are quite smart and quickly learn what is bad!

There is a though experiment that involves what would happen it various creatures from a mouse up to a horse jumped off a large building and what would happen to them...

Posting bad science whilst working is always fun!

Im sure he will be fine, babies tend to have bendy soft bones and things and if he looks fine and isnt in pain or anything that you can see then just shut him in and let him rest

If you're too worried take him to the vet to have a quick once over and never open the windows

That is correct, but terminal velocity is determined by wind resistance and mass, in this situation mavity is a constant force affecting all objects equally.

it'' be alright. you'd soon know if it was in pain or anything but if you realy want to make sure take it to the vets and explain whats happened

Fairly far...

If his legs and paws don't seem broken, he should be fine. Run your fingers over them (gently at first), and see if there are any obvious breaks, or places where he yelps in pain.
