how far can cats jump from?

hi guys,

we have 2 kittens who are now 4 months old... and i'm a bit worried cuz one of them just jumped from our bedroom (2nd story) window down to the patio :(

we've been very careful with windows and the like since we had them at 9 weeks, but guard let down just once and he bloody goes and jumps

he seems fine, a bit shaky and just wants to be picked up, but he doesn't seem damaged... surely they shouldn't be able to jump that bleedin far he's only little(ish) :(

am i worrying for nothing?

In the 60s a lot sof research was done on falling cats and how they manage to right themselves, the neural processes involved and the maximum height for LD50 equivalence (the height from which 50% of cats will survive)

Interestingly enough the survival rate against height shows a bimodal distribution. At low heights cats are fine at higher heights they fear the impact and tense their muscles in shock causing massive impact injuries. But at even higher heights they have time to relax and gain a safer posture which allows them to experience a higher survival rate, even frm 10 stories.

We've had cats jump form the 2nd story of our house. But then we have also had cats climb up the wall on the outside and into the window or under attack eaves

Seems a bit harsh. Could he not have grabbed it by the scruff of the neck or let it climb down in it's own time. No, let's poke it with a cattle prod! Ace!

Haha, I thought that, but it's actually one of those adjustable animal catchers that have a loop at the end. So he was trying to get the loop around the cats head so he didnt fall - I doubt he was expecting it to jump from there to be fair.

I read somewhere that the maximum height that any animal can jump from is directly based upon its weight, will have a bit of a google now.

Would this work for humans? If we relax our muscles as we fall do we do less damage?

Panzer

Yup. Thats why really drunk people survive falling off stuff.

Well, I sprained my ankle falling off a wall when drunk, but maybe i just wasnt drunk enough!

PK!

Had this freind who used to swing his cat around in a circle from his tail and fling it over the washing line.

I think the cat ran away
