How good is your anti-virus software?

Meh.. saved the file, AVG Free didn't do anything until I did a manual scan.

Even then it didn't seem very bothered.

Kaspersky here, saved, opened several times, 2 mins gone, nothing.

And tbh I'm not too impressed with it overall, I used a Microsoft worm scanner/removal tool a few days ago and it found 6 worms, all missed by kaspersky. kasperky did find them as the microsoft software was finding them,/scanning but obviously that's fairly useless.

Edit, clocked it with a right click/scan file.

Open Kaspersky, click on Settings > Anti-Malware > Settings (under files and memory) > Additional tab > change the scan mode to "On access and modification". It'll pick it up as soon as you click save. :)

Why is it that Macs cannot get viruses?

They can, but think of it this way:

You're a hacker wanting to infect as many people as possible, do you:

1: write a Virus for an OS used by about 10% of computers

or

2: write a virus for an OS used by about 80% or computers

?

the 10% tbh becuase most the PCs will have an AV program, and most the macs won't so you've probably got a better chance of scoring.

Yeah, but most AV programs can't really detect new virii, even with heuristics. It would probably be able still be able to infect a good proportion of windows PCs.
At least until the virus definitions are updated.
Not quite sure what this test is supposed to prove. Even if this was the only thing your AV program had a definition for, it would still pass.

Avast! did the full bells and whistles within a fraction of a second of changing the extension to .com. Massive pop-up window, spinning warning symbol, siren and a spoken warning. Details stated it was a test, not a virus.

Handy way to test that the scanner is active.

Tests the scanner is active. Tests the scanner doesn't have corrupted virus definitions. Tests real-time scanning is active.

Multiple uses.

Hmm, I had to do a manual scan for it to be detected by AVG.

I then saved it as a .com file and tried again, but I had to select the file from My Documents in order for it to be detected again!

Ah well, I've already done a full system scan, took my computer 40 minutes to complete. Plus I keep my AVG updated on a regular basis, so hopefully, no real concerns!
