Prsonally if I was out for an entire day I would definately take my smartphone out with me. I made the mistake of not taking it on holiday with me (to save it being stolen/getting wet), taking a dumbphone instead... Got back to the UK and just missed the last train home. Instead of being able to navigate my way through london and check other forms of transport on the internet I resigned myself to sending a text to let someone know where I was and spending the night (in the cold) sat outside Kings Cross station... Never again am I not going to be without my smartphone!
My phone however locks with a passcode screen, which nicely has my contact details on (Name, home phone no. and post code) so it wouldn't be difficult to get it back to me and reveal no other data (you have to get past the pass code screen to read texts etc).)
