How is this for a system

I'm reluctant to spend more than £500, I want to the option to play games but am not a big gamer and I would like it to be very quiet. 500GB is plenty of space. I may consider overclocking but i'm sure 3.00g will prove to be more than enough.

Can anyone offer any improvements on this setup? Is it worth getting PC2-8500??

Personally I'd up the cpu to a q6600 quad core, easily reach 3.0ghz with that cooler plus its a tad cheaper too...:)

im afraid that is the on-going debate on the forums

some will argue that as games become multi-threaded - can use more then 1 core then the quad will be better in the long run, while some argue that faster core speed is better.

what else do you do with the PC?

i'd swap the mobo to a p35, something like the abit ip35/asus p5k.

if you want quiet go for a case with 120mm fans all round rather than 80mm, something like the antec sonata 3, has 120mm fans and they have speed controllers on the current fans.

Surf the web, programming and some DVD ripping/copying.

I noticed the IP35 are a big choice for those OC'ing the Q6600.

realise you can get an 8800gt for only a little more than the 3850 i listed but it should be decent enough if you're not a hardcore gamer and brings it closer into you're budget.

Whatever you do you are going to have to get a better psu. 380w will not be enough to power that lot, especially as you will be clocking it. The Earthwatts is a good psu, you just need a more powerful one. Just like the case and psu suggested above.

How about this

Seriously get a p35 board and save your self a tenner. Also consider waiting a few weeks for new gfx cards.... (even if you dont want one they should push the 8800 prices down further,.. well i have my fingers crossed about that one).

Oh also i favour the E8400 as you probably will never really need quads till games designers get silly (aka a few years away) and my E8200 is brilliant :)

There is nothing whatsoever wrong with the 380w PSU. Have a  on me!
The 380w will quite happily cope with a standard overclocked system & a halfway decent graphics card.

More headroom is nice, but only really necessary if you're planning on adding more drives/ SLI cards in the future. If it was a cheap 380w PSU, then that's another matter, but this is a decent quality branded one and will cope quite nicely.

(Just for reference, I've been running 7 HDDs, motherboard and processor 24/7 off an Enermax 380w PSU for the past 18months; By your logic this probably ought to be a smoking ruin)

Cheers
