Basically if you're not into denim, you won't have a clue how to look after your jeans. If you have decent, raw denims, wash them at your peril. If they are anything else, washing them won't affect the indigo too much at all. I've had a pair of 1947 501 Blue meanies which were pre-washed etc, and after i washed these a couple of times, there's no noticable difference.
I bought a pair of APC's New Standards (Raw, Japanese Denim, selvedged) 3 months ago. I do my best to wear them at least 12 hours a day, every day.
I febreeze them, and air them out at night times, sometimes take them into the bathroom when showering so the moisture tightens them up a bit. Bar that, if i wash these jeans, they will be ruined.
I'm dying for the honeycombs etc to start appearing. I don't tend on washing these at all to be honest. I'm scared the indigo will be too blue.
I had a pair of 1967 505's which ruined the indigo once washed. I didn't like these anyways as the cut on the crotch was way too low. The APC's fit perfectly. (size down 2 as they are stretchy though).
If your jeans aren't raw, you can wash them because you're not affecting the faded areas etc, as these are normally pre loaded into the more 'fashionable' jeans you find in topshop etc. The problem with this is that the faded areas are in places where they shouldn't be. It's not personal or anything and the majority of times the faded areas look stupid.
My APC's are a project, and are more than just a pair of jeans that i throw on in the morning.
