How long will I get away with this I wonder?

I know - maybe they should invent a remote locking which makes the plate disappear when you blip it :D

I just don't see the point of front number plates except for congestion charge cameras and speed traps. No other need for them :(

It's one thing I agree with the yanks about :)

Which means you have no chance of taking them off and it being illegal !! I was driving through Chingford / Enfield way yesterday and they had a moving camera watching the bus lanes I have never seen one before..

Looks rubbish im afraid.

So you know you will "probably" get stopped by the police but you still do it ? You must have more money than sense..
Well I'll take them off after I get a fixed penalty notice, it's not like I'm going to keep them on in defiance getting fine after fine. I'm more curious than anything to see how long I can get away with it for, and I like the look enough to give it a try. :)

Each to their own I suppose but if you have £60 to give away might I give you my paypal address ?

Looks good but I'll give you a month before you get pulled.

The police might turn a blind eye to some slightly dodgy numberplates, but that's just taking the **** so I seriously doubt you'll last long.

In the last 30 years of illegal rear numbers plates on my motorbikes I've been pulled once for it , the Police have more important things to do ;).

However if they do want to pull you it does give them an easy excuse :D

All the cars in Singapore have black-silver license plates like that... it looks cool.

And they have safety cameras here, which are actually signed as "Speed Cameras" (!!!) that still manage to take photos of speeding cars.

Its different on a bike... they have to catch you first ;)

I know several cars running without front plates, and when they have been pulled for other reasons the police haven't mentioned the lack of front plate.

Looks good IMO. Hopefully you won't get pulled over - it would be quite petty, but it is against the law unfortunately - I'd be shocked if you got a raping for it though.

For 6 months I got away without a front numberplate on the 5, I wasn't pulled over for it, but I re-attached them when I wanted to sell. I'm tempted to remove the front number plate again - I can't stand 'em.

Illegal front number plates are far less likely to get you pulled over, mainly because the police would have to turn around to get you.

Sorry mate, that looks rubbish. Tin plates belong on classic motors not daily hacks.

This weeks new road wars on sky one showed a guy being a nob in his 3 series BMW. They pulled him and he had black plates. They did a £30 fine but didn't do him for the dodgy driving - typical :O.

So you might be lucky so long as you drive normal and your car can't be heard from another county ;)

I think on a black car, like that, they do look OK, certainly better then yellow IMO..

Occasionally some police forces have a period of zero tolerance on numberplates, but as you say, if it's just a £30 fine then it's not the end of the world..

Cheers for all the feedback. No problems driving into work today, drove past a Police van without any issue (although he wasn't in a position to be able to turn around even if he wanted to).

A mate of mine fitted black plates to his Alfa a couple of months ago, out of interest I just asked how he had got on:

Paul says: (09:25:06)
you still got your chav black plates on dude?
Craig says: (09:32:31)
nah, changed back... but will put front one back on
Craig says: (09:32:39)
got stopped and needed to take it to MoT place for a re-certification
Craig says: (09:32:40)
did that
Craig says: (09:32:45)
just haven't had chance to switch back yet
Paul says: (10:53:18)
how long did they last?
Paul says: (10:53:34)
the plates I mean, how long before you had to go to the MOT place
Craig says: (11:05:54)
they gave me a week to get the MoT check done and post in the thing
Paul says: (11:06:22)
yeah but how long were you driving around with the black plates on in the end
Paul says: (11:06:52)
ie from when you fitted them to getting nicked
Craig says: (11:09:09)
like 6-7 weeks...
Craig says: (11:09:13)
stopped 3 times in that time
Craig says: (11:09:20)
first 2 just, "change them and on your way"
Craig says: (11:09:26)
the last guy gave me a vehicle defect notice
Craig says: (11:09:33)
so i had to act on that
Paul says: (11:09:37)
ahh right

So there you go. I had a similar conversation with him about say it's a pointless mod that looks chavvy to a lot of people and will end up being a load of unnecessary hassle. I was right. :)

Why not go the whole hog and simply remove the plates? The fine is the same IIRC?

The answer to your rhetorical question is a police officer is almost 100% likely to pull you over for no plates, but is much less likely to pull you over for an incorrectly coloured plate?

Glad to be of help..

Oh, and an ex-director had black/silver plates on his Jag XK8 for 2 years and didn't get pulled once, despite how much we wanted him to be.. but then I suppose it depends on the police officers and their policies in your area..
