How long would it take to walk 3 miles?

Just buy a cheap bike and end this argument. Trust me, if you don't drive and you have to walk for more then 15-20 minutes, a push bike is a GREAT investment, it keeps you fit as well. I love my bike.

It wouldn't stop the arguments though because if the thread was 'How long would it take to cycle 3 miles?' then posters would come on saying it takes 5 minutes or other such nonsense.

I am 100% positive that people know how long it takes to get from A to B because they do it every day but I know for a fact that most people have no idea of distances and grossly exaggerate them.

The award for Internet Walking Heroes goes to ... General Discussion fantasists! Come on up and get your prize! Hang on, it doesn't exist - just like any truth in your absurd claims!

Back to you Ted in the studio.

walking normally it takes me about 30-40 minutes to walk 2 miles, so 3 miles I guess an 45 minutes -hour for the average person is probably right. I don't believe people who say they walk a mile in 10 minutes, surely it's possible, but like dmpoole says, I don't think it's sustainable and probably not what you want to do after a 8 hour shift.

Still.... get a bike, 3 miles would probably take you about 15-20 minutes in a normal pace.

Anyone saying significantly under an hour is either jogging, lying, making it up or a serious walker (that's waLker! ;) ). Look at the army videos; 5mph is a jog.

Walking speed doesn't scale linearly either, you can't maintain the same pace indefinitely. I love how people are saying I can do 1 mile in 10 minutes, therefore I can sustain 6mph.

Look how fast this guy is going when he reads out the speeds!

Now for people like Strife who think walking 10 minute miles is possible these Para's are doing 11 minute miles but they are doing a mixture of walking & jogging.

I hope that clears it up but I doubt it.

With heavy equipment, but crucially it's also rough terrain.

Imagine the same walk on pavements with no equipment.

Edit: Ok, I admit 10 minutes may be a bit much. 12 minutes? :p

It's not about how awesome you are it's about how long legs are and how fast they need to move to cover the distance.

You'd look like some sort of retard speed walking to work.

6mph if you don't mind looking like forest gump, 3mph otherwise.

I regularly do 5 mile walks along the roads and it takes around 90mins. Can't imagine maintaining 4mph speeds for any kind of distance.
