How many 290/290x before it worked?

Bought an MSI 290x Twin Frozr a month ago ignoring Gibbo's comments regarding it being a heatsoak, He was not wrong.

The card worked without fault but was using 80% fan just to keep temps at 80 degrees in Battlefield 4, This is in a 19 degree ambient room & suggested to me that the summer will leave little or no margin for cooling.

Sold it & bought a Sapphire Tri-X 290x from here, 72 degrees at 30% fan speed in Battlefield & have the utmost confidence in it.

Must have just been unlucky, mine stays around 70C at 40%ish fan speed in BF4 from what I recall (though mine is a 290 not 290X). Btw, MSI do actually allow you to change the thermal paste despite the 'warranty void if removed' screws, apparently they are only there to deter people who don't know what they're doing. Was on the MSI forums to confirm it :)

Bought a sapphire 290x ref card and black screened within 20 minutes. Down clocked it to 900 MHz and it worked fine for 2 hours. Returned for a refund and bought a 780.

I have 2 questions:

1. Did you do a deal with Satan?

2. What are your lottery numbers? :D

Ive never had a problem with any ATi/AMD cards thus far either.
Had a Nvidia card first then went
1950pro - worked fine
2x XFX 4850 - worked fine
HIS 6950 - worked fine except I sold it when it wouldn't unlock to 6970 lol
XFX 6950 - worked fine and unlocked to 6970
Sapphire 7970Ghz - second hand from a friend and worked fine
Sapphire 290x Tri-X oc - current card and works fine no probs.

Guess a lot of people get unlucky when buying AMD cards.

One sapphire Reference Black screen at stock clocks out of the box, increased volts it was fine,, Returned for a replacement which worked great

1x 290x (Didnt work)
2x 290 Pro (Didnt work)
2x 290 Pro (Works but issues with my motherboard now)

Still trying to fix all the problems.

Spent about 2 and half grand on parts and half of them faulty.

What make are they please?
And thats just about my feelings, i spent a grand and a half and most the parts were faulty.

My MSI Gaming OC 290 has been fine out of the box.

Added :)

Brand - 1x HIS, 1x MSI
Model - 290 Pro Reference x2
how many faulty - 0
how many non faulty - 2

Got my HIS R9 290 in early November when they were £310 and it's been solid as a rock apart from the one time when I stupidly tried to push the Elpida past 1300MHz and it BSOD'd.

Haven't touched the BIOS, but I did check if it was unlocked. No joy.

Runs quiet and cool thanks to an Arctic Accelero Xtreme 3 and a box of Alpenfohn heatsinks.

I have the exact card bought at almost the exact time and exact price and I have the exact same problem lol

1080/1300 seems to be the sweet spot for me with the reference cooler, any more on either clock and I start to get artefacts in Heaven and Valley and pretty quickly get a black screen and have to force a reboot.

Other than that I'm very happy with it and for the games I play I don't need much more.
