How Many Fingers do you Type With?

It's easier to type properly then it is to use 2 or 3 fingers, so I don't understand why people wouldn't take the time to learn proper touch typing?

Honestly, I'm not the fastest but I can't imagine how awkward it must be to use 2 or three fingers to cover the entire keyboard.

In my case I've just always typed like that and I can easily type at 250wpm just because of the length of time I've used a keyboard. Even on my ipad where I don't get any feedback or tells its quite simple.

It's always fun to watch people type with 2 fingers slowly though =D

I'm just typing this to see how many I use. Turns out I use the index and middle fingers of both hands, as well as thumb to press the space bar and littler finger to press the backspace key.

I have pretty enormous hands, I can hold a basketball upside down with my grip, so trying to touch type actually gets my fingers stuck under my palms and what not.

I get a pretty solid 50wpm as long as I don't have to search for any less than frequent characters such as | or get a word I don't actually know how to spell etc.

I don't appear to use the third finger on my right hand, or the third finger or thumb on my left hand.

I use the index and middle fingers for most things and my pinkies for enter, shift, tab, caps lock etc. Right thumb for space bar.

Argh why are you people talking about touch typing.

Thats just knowing where the keys are without looking, which you could do with 1 finger if you wanted.

I'm asking how many fingers you can type with, what does touch typing have to do with anything.

No more talk about touch typing thanks.

Nope.

You started a typing thread. Responses from touch-typists was going to be imminent :p Or do I really have to answer the OP as "10" ? Or did you wanted me to say 8 fingers and 2 thumbs? Bit of an open question.

Two, just my index fingers. Apart from shift for which I use my little finger. Can still type faster than most people I know.

Would be interesting for people to also post their WPM. On www.typeonline.co.uk/typingspeed.php I got 84 and 0 mistakes on the first go.

Your speed was: 81wpm.

You made 1 mistake, your mistake is shown in bold text:

Grrr, used to be a lot faster than that. Old age is catching me up at the age of 20. :(

On the bright side, I didn't look at my keyboard once. ;)

I use all of them, although some I don't use that often so I would say on average I use 8.

Looking at that type speed website I can do around 85 WPM, although if I can ignore accuracy a little and skip some punctuation I think I could hit 100 and still keep it easily readable.

I'm a bit of an oddball when it comes to typing because I don't solely use my index fingers; instead I use certain fingers for certain keystrokes, just not properly like a true touch typist would. I wouldn't be able to tell you which fingers I use for any particular keys without recording myself typing or something -- all I know is that that's how I type. Oh, and I can type quite quickly all things considered.

2+3

who the heck uses thumbs for typing?
Spacebar

I use all 8 plus two thumbs, though some less than others.

Like right pinky for enter, or left pinky for caps lock, either thumb for spacebar. I'm also one of those people who toggles on and off caps lock to type capitals, instead of using shift; bad habit but I manage. ;)

Just gonna give this a go and I've realised I use pretty much every finger apart from my pinky.

Actually no I use my pinkies for shift, ctrl and return.

I have learned to properly "touch type" the "real" way back in the day, but as soon as I stopped learning it I fell straight back in to my normal ways and I like it that way.

It's one of the pointless things in life that really gets me annoyed. How is that even a habit? It's not like it serves any purpose, it's just a stupid and wrong way of doing something. It's like saying "I'm taking the bins out dear!" then proceeding to pack up your rubbish, drive to the tip in the next town and empty it PIECE BY PIECE in to a skip. It's more effort and takes longer and has inherent problems that wouldn't exist if you used the perfectly good method that you have RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. It's like people right clicking folders and clicking "open" instead of just double clicking, or dragging the scroll bar on the right of a window instead of using the perfectly good scroll wheel that's been placed on the mouse. Utterly infuriating.
