How much are you prepared to pay for food?

I'll pay plenty for tip-top nosh.

I'm on the waiting list for El Bulli - with any luck, I'll get a table come 2009.

In the meantime, The Fat Duck at Bray it is :)

anything from £10-£60

I agree with this guy...

Nice meals don't usually come for under £10 nowadays!

What can you get for £6?! McDonalds isn;t much less than that is it?!

Most I have payed was about £100 a head when I was at Rick Steins, worth it.
Don't get me started - Rick Stein's restaurant is a travesty - Poor service, ,ediocre wine list, and completely uninspiring food.

The last time I went (unfortunately, it's in an area where the choice is extremely limited, and my folks like to go there), I have a doorwedge of Turbot that may as well have been microwaved boil-in-the-bag.

Did I pay? Did I ****x.

It depends what I'm eating, where I'm eating, what country I'm eating in, what I feel it's worth.

Then again I've had some stonking meals at £20 a head, and some average at £40. It's as much to do with the atmosphere as anything else. Wine bumps up the price significantly too - and I seldom have a big meal without wine.

I've had a £100 a head meal which wasn't really worth it, but hte atmosphere was great, the wine was brilliant, though the food wasn't worth the price. However I've had another £100 a head meal which was worth every penny. IT really does depend. For an average "just going out for the hell of it" meal, I wouldn't go beyond £30-£40 a head really. Bear in mind I'm in the big smoke.

What I was going to say. If you go to McDonalds or KFC, you're paying for food (or some semblance of it). At a restaurant you're often paying for the pleasure of good atmosphere and good company too. There's a really nice place near me that serves great but pricy food, and ale from the local brewery and that ended up being about £30-£40 a head (£15-£20 main courses). The food may not quite have been worth it but I'd pay it again because it's a nice place and I was with friends. It's rare that I'd go anywhere expensive enough to feel cheated though!

Depends what I've got in my back pocket on the given night, I've got no problem with an all you can eat chinese for a fiver and one of my favourite restaurants when out with the guys is an indian that provides any starter, any main, rice and naan + dessert (dessert is rubbish) for £11 and to that one you can bring your own booze so it's good for a real cheap night.

On the other hand the most I've spent is £60 a head not including wine for myself and the other half (at the time) it seemed worth it but you wonder if it was the occasion more than anything.

On average i'd say i spend between £30-£40 a head and tend to be happy with the quality i get from that.

I'd be quite happy to spend more really but when your salary is in the mid teens it would be unrealistic to expect to go spend £250 every time i ate out.

Absolutely. I don't care what a meal costs, provided I feel it was worth it. If it was, I'll go back. If it wasn't, I won't.

Let me put that another way. I don't mind really paying out provided the food, and the whole experience, justifies it. With far too many "name" restaurants, though, the food (and overall experience) doesn't justify it. The food might (though there's no guarantee) be good, but all too often, prices are hyped because of reputation and the food isn't that good.

What I do object to, though, is being given a big bill for the 'privilege' of having a celeb at the next table. Blow that for a game. That kind of place I avoid like a dose of the clap.

I really want to go to the fat duck, as being a scientist I like heston Blumenthal scientific ideas about cooking, so i'd be fascinated to see the food he cooks. Just got to find someone to go with, the joys of being single.

My ex went to El bulli (or a restaurant called that near barcelona I think) for her fathers birthday and said the food was absolutely breathtaking, like nothing she'd ever experienced.

Otherwise I don't mind paying a lot for food if its worth it. I really enjoy food, and eating out in restaurants.

The last time I took Miss K out for a proper meal it cost me about £80 and boy was it worth it.

but if we are just poping out for a bite say lunch time on a saturday then £15 is more than enough.

I took my sister brother and Miss K out for a meal a week or two ago and it came to £80 and all we had were started and desert.

Same here. Usually pay between £10-£50 per person. Somtimes more somtimes less. I find it hard to go into town and justify going to fast food places when there are very good restaurants who offer much better value for the same kind of price or just a little bit more e.g.

Tempura cod with lemon & cracked pepper creme fraiche, Oven roast pork & apple sausages with mash & calvados infused gravy with fresh seasonal vegetables & potatoes - £7

hot smoked salmon with horseradish, hand made beefburger glazed with raclette cheese, hand cut chips & melted onions - £8.95

I quite enjoy going to one of the local Tapas places, normaly £2-£3 per item but it's worth it.

I think I like my food too much :o :D

I've been to some pretty good restaraunts in my time

The Waterside
The Manior
Chewton Glen
Le Gavroche

The best for food was probably The Manior, I've paid a lot for good food (maybe £150/ head) and not regreted it, however if were talking about the experience I've had great times in cheap places, as long as the food is passable and the wine is reasonable and the company is good then I'll eat anywhere; if the company is great then a cold kebab and a can of coke can be a revelation :)

As many of you had said, it really depends where you are, the people you're with and what mood you're in. I've quite happily spent over £150/head in Moscow for what was a brilliant meal but then again spent less than £5/head for another brilliant 2 course meal at a Lebanese bistro I know on the left bank in Paris. Both were great but for completely different reasons.

In the end the money doesn't really matter as long as I don't come away feeling ripped off for the pleasure of having eaten there. The problem is in this country it happens rather too often these days.

Depends on where it is, when it is.... so many factors.

But really, £6? SIX POUNDS? Just about gets you a Weatherspoons "burger and chips" type meal..... £6 is barely more than a Burger King. Your average kebab is £4, a Subway is not much less. A sarnie from a garage will be about £2.50. So £6 isn't going to buy you very much even if you bought the ingredients and cooked them yourself.

Of course, abroad matters are different. An average main course in Slovakia was £3.50 ish, in Poland £4-£5. Rhodes about £5-£7. Of course you could spend lots more by having steak or seafood.

6 Pounds, gets you like a meal in burger king......

if the food is nice, the place is nice, the service is nice, heck why not pay a lot..

when we went over to austria we went in the poshest restaurant we could find, they brought out food to show to you, before they took it to other peoples tables.

and then we went to a cheap place in the mountains and the foooood was way! better! much more tastier and had great customer service.

Couldn't agree more with you MB. I've even managed to enjoy a Mcdonalds due to being in the correct company!

I don't really eat out a lot, when i do it's usually a pub meal and there £15 gets you a pretty good meal. I don't mind paying more for good food.
