How much does Sky *really* cost?

I can't beleive how much people pay for TV! There's no way I'd be paying £60 a month for that!
9 million odd people do with Sky ;) Depends how much you value watching movies and sports, which are the most expensive parts of the package. The normal channels begin only at £18.50 a month.

Don't Liverpool have some kind of TV channel like Chelsea and Man Utd?

Go support one of the Bristol teams, it would be cheaper and you wouldn't be plastic ;)

Back on topic, I only know from Virgin Cable (but I think the costs are similar) so you would be looking at ~£50 a month at least.

Duke's right really, if you spend an awful lot of time watching sport there really is no other way to keep up to date as well as sky.

With Rugby League, Rugby Union, Premiership, Championship games and much, much more it's an awful lot of entertainment.

The Sky World package can be had for £47.50 which is every channel they do (inc movies and sports) from what I can see? Seems pretty good??

I wish they would granularise the packages a bit more, I hate having to pay for guff I don't want just to get some of the channels.

Yeah it seems expensive on the face of it but when you break it down it is actually quite good value.

I have got all the Sky channels, ESPN and HD and it is around £67.50. I decided against their broadband as I read some bad reviews and need a reliable service.

You need a BT phone line - for some reason (and I don't get this) they will not install if it's Telewest - I find this a load of crap.

because of broadband and sky boxes.

Also broadband totally depends on the quality of the landline
Oh and Virgin is so much better.

Football coverage in the UK is a joke, the FA really need to get with the times.

NFL coverage in America is BRILLIANT. Virtually EVERY game is televised (even college football) and accessible. They even have online packages, you can stream every game in HD online, for £120 a season. If they did that in the UK I would be all up in that!

It's because they can't provide broadband services on a Cable line as Sky operate as a LLU provider on BT's network. They also cannot provide the 'Sky Talk' service as it also require the use of BT's network.

You could argue there is no technical reason why it can't be installed if you don't want Sky Talk or Broadband but the contract states that the box must be connected to a phone line for 12 months if they do the installation. I'm guessing that Virgin Media also has something to do with this, being their #1 competitor and all.

It's *meant* to be I thought and you're meant to have it connected during the first 12 months of your contract.

Saying that, my Mum's 'fell out' after 1 day, shame ;)

I want to move away from VM, I don't like not being able to opt out of their 404/501 screens.

Did you try here? Apologies if you already did that.

It's already confusing enough - otherwise this thread wouldn't be here. What channels would you split up?

Sadly if you want sports or early-run movies now Sky or Virgin are the only realistic choices (illegal options excepted, obviously). Cost of entry is prohibitively high so that's likely to be the way it stays. :(

Yep its in the contract although how often they check (if at all), I don't know. I gather it sends info on what channels you watch doesn't it? As well as being used for some interactive stuff (when making payments for example).

Most updates are done over the air. I suspect Sky can probably command a box to 'phone home', but whether they do and how often, I don't know.

Phone line is required for most interactive services, as well as Sky Box Office.

they do to update themselfs and it's also part of the contract. Also isn't some of the interaction stuff done over phone line.

I've not had any problems using the interactive features like box office without a phone line, I assume that they just charge the cards account holder. As for the interactive games and such I've never used them. Come to think of it I've never actually seen anyone with sky willing to put a telephone cable through the living room to it.

That seems odd as there's no way of them linking the purchase to your account if there's no phone line plugged in (that I'm aware of). They can store whatever they like on the card, but the phone line is the only way of getting data back to them (the satellite dish can't transmit data).

Have you ever actually had one of the box office purchases appear on a bill when the phone line has been (and stayed) physically unplugged?
