How much does your graphics card really cost?

If I pay £530 for a GPU, it has cost me £530, doesn't matter if I keep it for 2 days or 2 years.

If I buy something for a £100, it has cost me £100. What I sell if for doesn't change that.

But it also in no way whatsoever affects your decision? And you can in no way see how it might affect anyone elses?

I answered the question based on what I think, not on what others would think. The price I buy it for is what it cost me, either I have the money or I don't. I don't waste time thinking that if I keep a GPU for 2 years, it will only cost me £5 a week or whatever.

I also don't worry about resale value, because if the resale value is a factor in my decision then I can't afford to buy the card in the first place. You might get lucky and be able to sell for a profit like I did with my Vega 64 card or the prices could plummet like when the 290 cards dropped a lot in value after the 970/980 cards were released. You just don't know what's going to happen.

But, you said, if it costs me £530 it doesnt matter if i keep it 2 days... you are honestly saying you would pay £530 for a GPU on the expectation you would just chuck it in the bin after 2 days? Longevity in no way affects your decision?

Bought PS3 for £250 about 10 years ago so £2 per month :p

And I must have spent round £7000 to £9,000 on PC stuff over the last 10 years (over 2k of that would be just on monitors)

You are making really ridiculous arguments now to prove what? Why would I chuck it in the bin? And I am paying £530 for a GPU with a warranty, of course I expect a GPU to last for years, but, I might not keep it that long, I might sell it, I might return it under DSR or I might keep it unopened in a safe for 20 years. None of that affects the price I paid. It cost me £530.

You said it doesn't matter if it lasts 2 years or 2 days, that that in no way affects your decision and you don't understand how that would affect anyone's decision. People have expressed a way in which they determine value based on longevity, you said it doesn't matter if it lasts 2 days. I'm pointing out that you DO factor longevity in to YOUR decision too, even if you are choosing to mock other people for their expression of that determination.

Remember the pretext to this thread is that the forum has been inundated with threads and posts by a vocal minority that it's completely pointless to spend more than £200 on a GPU because a console can do everything better than an overly expensive PC GPU. No one is saying "My GPU only cost me £5." They are just saying that in the long run, compare with other hobbies or expenditures, it's not actually that "expensive" or "poor value", as a few would try to have you believe.

Your initial purchase cost was £530.

Have you a problem? Point out where I mocked anyone? I already said that I was answering the question based on what I would do. I was just pointing out how ridiculous your argument was about chucking it in the bin after two days. You are just making stupid exaggerations to prove some kind of point. I don't factor in Longevity into my purchase decision for a GPU. It's not something I think about. Every GPU I have had, I have given away or sold on before the warranty expired. And I certainly don't think about Longevity the way this thread is talking about it, that I count back the number of days and work out how much per day it is.

As for your second paragraph? What has any of that preaching go to do with my previous posts? Show me where I think that people are saying their gpu only costs £5? Show me where I said anything about the cost versus consoles? Show me where I said that the money I spent on GPU's was bad value?

If you want to completely ignore the context of the discussion thats up to you, not much i can help you with.

LOL. As I said, I answered a question in this thread with what I would do. For some reason, you read into that, that I was mocking everyone else in this thread, that I think GPUs were bad value and consoles are better. No thanks, I don't need your kind of help.

?

You joined an ongoing conversation and chose to completely ignore both the thread as well as the opening post and then get uppity when people read your post within the context of what was already being discussed.

Mmmkay.

I can apologise for reading things you didnt intend, but looking back i can't see that I was anything but polite and asking simple questions. In response you accuse me of being ridiculous (for repeating what you said no less) and preaching.

You said you would buy a GPU for £530 even if you intended to keep it for two days as it "didnt matter". I only asked you to clarify what you meant as you seemed to be dismissing anyone that factored length of ownership or amount of use in to their purchasing decisions. Which doesn't make any logical sense.

Edit: No, I am not going to get involved.

Works out at under £10/month thus far, can't see myself replacing it in the next year unless something drastic happens with regard to pricing.

No, i think you'll find he did exactly what he meant to do with the quote.

Changing something someone else has said to suit your own confirmation bias is a sign of desperation.

Much like trying to lessen a burden by selling yourself denial.

If in any doubt, the defensiveness and anger is a dead giveaway.

Consumer psychology - fascinating if not quite frightening.

He didnt do that, he just shortened your post as keeping the full text was unneccesary. Over reading something in to something someone never said is just strawman though.

I'm sure none of the people here protesting about using length of ownership to calculate value have never happily bought a bar of chocolate for say £2 that's twice as big as a £1 one, knowing it will last them twice as long...
