Just got off the Phone from Apple.

iPod Mini finally gave up over the weekend. Sods law its just outside of warranty as well. After spending 30 minutes in a call que I got through to the operator.

"Hello I need to send my iPod off for repair this has happened Yadda Yadda Yadda"

"Ok Mr Reid that will be £69.00 Pounds"

"How Much ???!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!???!?!"

"My Mistake. Its £169.00 ONE SIX NINE before parts"

Price confirmed with Apple in the Trafford Centre

At least Dick Turpin wore a mask before he robbed you.

/RANT

how much do they normally go for? (i.e. would you be better off just buying a new one every time the warranty ran out?! :p )

My mate just told me the mini has been discontinued in light of the Nano. It would appear that is the standard Apple fee for looking at things out of Warranty nowadays. The lad in the store had only been there 2 weeks so he says so that may or may not be true

You think that's ludicrous, one guy over at sony vaio forums had called in because the battery on the Pocket vaio (Mp3 player) had started giving rubbish times.

They asked for £219 just for the battery. Same price as the player. =\

An example of why I'd never buy an iPod, whoever iconic it is supposed to be.

But then it is out of warranty so cant expect it to be repaired for free but £160 is kinda outrageous tbh. Guess Apple aint bothered as they will make money off you from either getting it repaired or buying a new one.

whats actually wrong with it? you can get loads of bits to repair the ipods online and its not that hard a job to do (just did my cousin's mini battery the other day) or there are places that will do the repairs for you.

NB if your going to bin it take the drive out, a 4gig flash drive is worth a decent amount of cash :D

True, but you also have to bear in mind that legal rights don't end with warranty expiration. You have rights up to 6 YEARS after you buy something .... but what they are will depend on the nature of the problem, and the "reasonable" expectations about life of the product.

A warranty provides pretty much whatever the manufacturer chooses to provide, but they have no say in your statutory (sale of Goods Act, etc) rights.

Apple can take the view that they "ain't bothered", but it sometimes has consequences beyond a given item, and perhaps beyond what they may have intended. Apple pulled a similar stunt with me some years ago, and none of my companies have touched a single Apple product since. Furthermore, in my consultancy role .... well, let's just say that the nature and attitude of my experiences with them have erm, coloured my perceptions.

I don't mind paying more for quality - in fact, I prefer it, but I DO object to be treated like an idiot.

Do all minis have flash drives? I have a 6gb mini, would mine have one?

i'm pretty sure they all have basically a compact flash II card in them, not 100% that some of them ain't microdrives (very very mini harddrives, with platters and everything) but i do know that when the mini was released it was the cheapest way to buy a 4gb solid state compact flash!

Sony once tried to charge me £110 for a replacement battery recharger for my MiniDisc player. Even the guy in the Sony Centre seemed shocked. Luckily I found a universal charger in Argos for £6. :)

Thing is I dont mind paying for it to be repaired. I know its out of warranty so you can't expect to have it done for free. The charge just seems somewhat excessive. Its not as though you can get them to have a look at it and then say the cost is £169.00 pls £X for the parts. They want £169.00 just for the privellage
