How Much!!!!!!

I've got a client with two Ipods that are needing fixing, but cost more to fix than to replace, so she replaces them when they die,

its people like her who are keeping Apple in business I think.

The price for this repair is clearly insane, but so too is believing that other major manufacturers are any different. I have had bad experiences with creative, sony and canon. I appreciate that the ipod is not to everyones taste, but at least try and put that issue aside when discussing the cost and quality of repairs.

Edit: Some repair info for comparison
1) Canon, 280 pounds to repair a 500 pound camcorder, which could then be purchased for 320 quid. 1year and 3 months old
2) Sony. Broken remote control. No obvious damage, just stopped working (no it was not the batteries). TV and remote cost 560 quid. Cost of replacement remote 110 pounds
3) Creative muvo thingy, the headphone socketcame loose, resulting in distorted or no sound. Cost of muvo 120, repair 70 + VAT quid. In the case the tech guy apologised and admitted that the cost was so high because they don't really want to do repairs!

"this item is under 5 years old you have every probability of a free repair or significant contribution towards replacement.
the onus is on the retailer who sold you the goods to sell you something of acceptable quality and durability."

This is very true, but forget it unless you wish to go to the small claims court. I know this from experience with cannon.

What on earth is she doing to them, I've had a total of 3 ipods (different generations and models). All of which had had extensive use, including exposure to shock while running. The only problem I have ever had was when my 4g broke into around 4 parts when I dropped it while jogging. Which is hardly apples fault.

Your client has either been extreamily unlucky of is abusing these devices.

I said this further up but people love to bash Apple but they don't realise it happens with everybody.
My daughters I-River has had a quote of £100 for a £140 device.
I've also paid £200 for an old Epson Stylus Color 900/980 to be repaired but anybody who knows their printers will know why I had it repaired.
The problem with these forums is that the majority of members are still living at home and therefore have had very little experience with repairs.
Most young people have MP3 players etc and its the only thing they can really discuss and if your IPOD beating MP3 player hasn't broken yet then you can't discuss it yet. Of course, when it does then they will say it costs £10 to repair.

My IPOD Mini has fell on the floor and travelled along the road at least 25 times while I've been running so I haven't got clue what she must be doing to them. It also gets battered by rain, sleet and snow.
My vote goes for putting them in the wash.

My iRiver was replaced for free. I'd broken the screen and emailed them about it. They just told me to send it in and they gave me a brand new one in return. Can't argue with that.

Was it within warranty? I bet it was. Try the same thing when it's out of warranty.

I have been told that Apple operate a similar policy with ipods, when within the 1 year warrenty. Even replacing 4g ipods with 5g.

I've got one and its on a par with my workmates IPOD Mini.
I borrowed his Mini and liked it and he borrowed my I-River and he liked it.
Theres nothing in it.

I agree with whoever said about the ages of members on here. They've had little experience in life of things being repaired when out of warranty. We now live in a throwaway society and obsolesence is built into everything.
Why do you think its a multi billion pound industry in extended guarantees?
The price of repairring things out of guarantee is ludicr4ous and amazingly not just Apple although many on here would love to believe it.

My mate has one at work and he's well impressed. Functional but a tad on the ugly side. Guess you cant have it always. Listened to it and it sounds better than the iPod not sure if that is the headphones or the actuall player

i dunno about hte stock headphones as i got some others, never used the supplied but they are hella good, i suggest everyone buys one

Two reasons :

1. People are ignorant as to their statutory rights.
2. Sales staff earn horrendous commission and push these onto the type of people in point 1.

I will agree with your two points but also raise you the fact that after five years a product is deemed obsolete. This doesn't help when your MP3 player breaks after thirteen months though.
