How the hell do Currys stay in business?

Back in the late 90s/early 00s I worked at Tempo no one cared or knew much at all about what they were selling it was more just saying yes to everything and hoping for the best.

I interviewed for them in late 1996. They offered me a Job straight away but I chose to stay where I was as the perks & job security were better as I put that first before pay. Just as well. I left Electrical retail before it went bust anyway.

I just bought a new washing machine dryer and dishwasher at the start of the week. Got a fair deal for buying all 3. Still came to £718.

Delivery on the other hand is a bit of a joke, there was a free slot for Wednesday the 5th so we took that. By the time they had put through the order the slot was gone so it’s now the 14th unless we pay another £20 we can get it next day.

Currys have definately evolved for the better over the years, they aren't stupidly overpriced and do offer up some good deals, like any decent sized purchase you should spend some time and effort researching other retailers prices and offers.

My last TV was from currys as the price was good and as it was an insurance replacement I got a payout from the insurer and having identified the TV I wanted Currys was the cheapest, and with a 5 year guarantee, I then made it even cheaper by buying discount gift cards from various websites and forums.

It was delivered when it said it would be and it's been fine.

The stores are very well setup so you can see the items working and I've seen them have people from Samsung and Sony on the floor as well to assist. Stores and staff cost money, I don't think they do too bad a job in this day and age.

Currys have improved on price and service over the years. They used to be shocking (cable for £50, dodgy warranties etc). Bought a few PC bits and a Switch over Xmas and delivery was next day. They even called me up to check if my order was OK which I thought was pretty odd, but impressive all the same

My local Curry’s have always been pretty good and the guys there are genuinely knowledgable and helpful. When I had my Samsung TV’s that kept falling apart they exchanged them with no hassle. Can’t really say I have been there in the last year but did have a few items delivered which came on time.

Used to work on Customer Services at a branch on a Manchester retail park during my uni days.

Absolutely awful place to work, both in respect of the employer but also the type of idiot customers we had to deal with.

I've had people bring in deep fat fryers full of oil and food dumped in front of me telling me to fix it when its conked out and i've heard other members of staff describe a dual core computer as an "i6" because it had a dual core i3 in it (or words to that effect, I can't remember the exact generation/processor referred too but it was dumb.

Only positive I got was being able to guarantee snagging consoles and games on or slightly before release day.

Can't really say too much bad about Currys to be honest, I think we got our Microwave/toaster/kettle from them at the going rate.

We went back to buy a laptop for the Mrs and it was good being able to have a feel for them as she didn't like the 13" one I think it was a HP Envy but tried a few and settled on a 15" HP of sorts, we were left alone to mess about and I asked for a slightly better spec model with better ram and processor there was no issues.

I ended up launching our old Dyson down the stairs in a huff as it was making lots of noise and picking nothing up so a visit to Currys again to pick up a Shark, a few hundred quid even on offer but it seemed a fair price.

The only thing I don't like but is fine for what I do as I keep track of finances is that with the laptop they offered 0% for 24 months so stuck the £700 on that and the Shark was something like 6 months.

Once set up it is basically a £5k limit store card and as far as I can see there isn't an option to set up a direct debit. The direct debit will start once the 0% period has ended which isn't ideal. Each month I have to log on and pay a payment to each item individually which I can imagine would get out of hand for some people I know.

Has anybody had their PC/upgraded by them?
I was told they can do my upgrade for me in half an hour (enough time for me to go for something to eat/go for a pint) but I've got to provide the gear myself.

It looks easy enough to do on the Youtube videos but if take the cheaper option and do it myself all matter of things could go wrong.
Chances are the people who've made the videos on how to doi t're experiencd trained technically skilled professionals.

I built a computer blind at age 14 so that isn't true at all.

You're probably more techincally skilled than I am,
can you change a light bulb? can you follow simple lego instructions? do you have the internet and a device capable of playing videos? you too are certified to install upgrades into a computer.

it's really not hard, choosing the parts is the hard part and you can post on these forums for help anyway with a "spec me an upgrade!" thread.

PC parts are literally plug and play, windows will set it up find the drivers.

it's idiot proof almost..... just simple common sense, discharge static from your body, don't mess around with fluids or food.... keep the area clean and plug things in.

it literally takes 10 minutes to swap out a motherboard, cpu and memory

it's as simple as pushing something into a slot, like those wooden puzzles babies learn with that are colour coded.
if you can do one of those and are over 12 years old you can build a pc.

even if your not over 12 you can probably still do it
