*** How to obtain a bike license ***

I'd like to take a Direct Access course in London or the South East in the next few weeks. Any recommendations? I'll be taking the Novice option so CBT Day 1.

I'd buy something like this straight afterwards.

I would check the insurance against that before you buy it...as a new rider and in London you will probably see some hefty quotes!

Can't recommend any places to do your lessons round there but I would advise getting your theory before booking the course.

Yer get your theory done pronto.

Most (good) places having waiting lists going in to the weeks (4-5 weeks easy) so get looking and ringing round asap.

I don't know why, but I have issue with sweating. Every time I removed my helmet, my head would just be hot and I'm sweating all over. Same for my jacket, I only had a single layer underneath and it is around as thin as a t-shirt. Yet my jacket was soaking when I took it off at the end. Same for the pants / boots. It's something I've had trouble with all my life but never could understand why.

You could literally wring the sweat out of my tshirt when I was doing my CBT, a combination of nerves and not getting up enough speed to cool you down.
I still get a bit warm if I'm just pootling around town although I've invested in a much nicer summer jacket with plenty of ventilation which makes all the difference.

How far 'South East' can you go?

I'd highly reccomend A-Z training, they're just off the M2 in medway - I did my 3 day course with them and Steve is a great instructor and they're one of the cheapest places in Kent.

Might be a little far to go though espcially as some days I was starting at 8am.

Thanks, I'll take a look. Looks like it is an hour away from me which is fine.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the 3 day course?

Is it just me, or are some biker forums pretty much unfair? I was reading up on other people who hadn't managed to complete training in a day and I was shocked by some of the replies. A few was saying you'd be a "****" to not complete CBT in a day. Someone also said something along the lines of "if you don't complete the cbt in a day, then riding isn't for you". How can people have this attitude?

Not everyone learns at the same pace and even if I was given the chance to go on the road, for my own safety and others around me, I would continue to train until I am ready. Training can only make you improve, right?

Reddit community though are really supportive about people who hadn't managed to complete the CBT, so that's nice to read and you guys here :D

I'm going back on Friday 29th May to continue my journey  hoping to learn more on top of what I already know.

Also I think the CBT should be a course over a few days. You wouldn't give someone a car and say learn to drive this in a day.

It's quite strange that you can get that sort of attitude on forums but then you'd never catch car drivers nodding to each other or more than one of them pulling over to check you're alright or to give you a hand when you've broken down.

Most bike forums are full of absolute scum.

Bikers in the "real world" are a great group to be part of so don't let some pathetic idiot keyboard warriors put you off :)

Forgot the website link: http://www.cbtmedway.co.uk/

I paid just over £500 for the 3 day course, I'd done around 6k miles on a 125 prior to this so only needed the 3 day one. Passed first time, zero faults on the MOD1, 2 minors on the MOD2.

That last statement I 100% agree with, if someone's never driven a car it's scary that you can be let out on a 150kg machine which can do 70mph, with minimal knowledge of the highway code, and 2 hours in total on road experience.

One of the guys in the office was asking me what it's like to ride the other day and I said "As long as you don't think about the fact you're flying down the road on a cushion and a pair of wheels at 70mph it's great, once you start processing that information it gets a bit weird :D"

anyone can pass the cbt though, its more of a money making scheme for the government rather than care about your safety, you'll find its car/bus/taxi drivers and lemming pedestrians that cause you the most grief

biking is all about the freedom, just hop on and go anywhere and go there cheaply aswell

Haha, we are basically sat straddling an engine with internal parts moving at 10K rpm, with a large can of highly flammable liquid on top, with a credit card size contact with the road...

Yeah, I just feel the time stated doesn't exactly give enough time to really train you. The best instructors will continue training until you feel ready for the road, and the more you train, the better you will become.

So if it means I have to take things unusually slower than most people, I will prefer extra training for my own safety over a piece of paper any day. Later on, if I have more training than others, chances are it's those without the extra training who will find themselves in a spot of bother after the CBT is issued.

I just hate how certain parts of the bike community, frown upon those who value safety over completing things in a day.

There's my thought for my 20 mile commute this evening :D

true but you can only be safe upto a certain point, the best thing about the cbt is that it learns you lifesavers and your riding system

out on the open road is where you'll learn most of the things and build up experience, doesn't matter how well your trained or how long you've been riding theres always something that will catch you out

just take your time and enjoy it,there's no rush

Thinking about that just makes it seem even more fun to me :D

Depends on the training company / trainer as well. The one I went with wasn't great and I had my CBT by just after lunch (I felt quite safe & confident, but kind of expected more training regardless), but I've heard others that will do 2-3 days training if they need to, to pass you properly. The problem is, anyone can sign the bit of CBT paper, so it's easy for training companies to take your money and give you a CBT to keep you happy so you keep going back to them.
