How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

PC shop had a clearance sale on these heat sinks so I snagged a pack for 3$ to try placing them on my pcb along with repasting the chip.
The VRM's on the board do have a metal plate that goes across them as you can see in the picture to provide cooling. It would be optimal to the heatsinks directly on the VRM's but figured it wouldn't do any harm to place em on the plate.

GDDR5 vram chips don't really get hot to begin with but figured to cover them up as well. I did run into a clearance issue with 3 of them so I had some spare heatsinks which I later just placed elsewhere (using 5 instead of 4 on the VRM plate) and on another chip.

I ran some stability test, impressed with the drop in idle and load temps and that noticed one chip in particular (the one circled in yellow) would get REALLY hot. So I opened it back up and placed a spare heatsink ontop of it as well. Strangely enough temps improved AGAIN. This might be more so to do with maybe the gpu cooler being applied tigher or different than before that affected temps but it was damn perfect before. I don't know how or if it did change the load temp by placing it but it must help regardless, given how hot that chip was getting.

Can anyone shed light on which chip controller it is?

I used playing Metro Last Light and Chivalry as benchmarks.

Chivalry used default clocks 920/1250 @ 1.075v. I know from many hours of gaming it will peak at 58-60c. This has been changed to 47-49c. A drop of ~10c.

Metro used my stable overclock setting of 1100/1350 @ 1.170v. It would peak around 77-80c. It now stays peaks at 65-68c.

I haven't tried out tweaking around voltage now if I require less than before to help temps or OC the core but i'll be sure to try it out now.

[EDIT] I've since managed to peel off the vrm plate using a thin blade off my pen knife

Slapped this on today: Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo II VGA Cooler

and peak temps droped from 70 C to 58 C. and noise halfed.

Modding for best results

I just wanted to come and say hello to all in this thread and thankyou, got a lot of information from this and managed to get a very nice OC on my 7850. In fact I still have a lot of room to breath, thanks to my custom modded version

See Pic below ;)

Hoping to get to 1300mhz, stable and cool. Currently running at 1250 by 5800, at 54C full load :)

My Sapphire 7850 is not in a case and has a PCI riser cable so it's currently standing up.

I use it for hash cracking so memory overclock is not important

1250mhz Memory

Card is 68oc on this very hot 25 degree day. My room is baking as I'm in a flat.

Hi Fr4nc.

I have the same card.
Can I ask what settings you've used ?

Hello all, thought I would add my 2GB Sapphire has been running well OC for over a year but I have managed to keep my volts down (or some would say push harder :) Not taken it higher than this.

GPU 1200Mhz, mem 5400 Volts 1.155.
I have just run 3dmark 11 on performance and score combined 7700.

Mine is running well at OC speeds for about a year now 1200/1450. Well worth getting an OC edition.

I don't have the OC version, but the Sapphire version and I have had mine OC'd for over a year at the same speeds no problem. I actually just went from 12.10 drivers to 13.4. 12.10 were rock solid for me, but we'll see how the 13.4 hold up.

That's good. Generally OC editions tend to clock higher, but yours is testament that it is not always the case. Checked with Heaven that the error checking is not kicking in too much?

Hey guys, just looking at OCing my 7850 a bit more and have removed CCC and installed Asus GPU Tweak.

I've enabled Overclocking Range Enhancement (set slider to 1100, works like a charm) but to go much further I think I'll need to play with voltage. However, there is no voltage option that I can see :( is mine voltage-locked or am I doing something wrong?

I actually have the Sapphire OC edition, I forgot.

Is anyone having issues with 13.4 drivers? For some reason everything after 12.10 crashes for me.
