How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

Question. I have a 6970 that doesn't clock much over stock, would one of these clocked at 1150 be a decent upgrade? I can sell the 6970 for 150 quid btw.

Stock
GPU 900Mhz @ 1075V (Under volted as default was 1210V); Mem 4800Mhz

Overclocked
GPU 1140Mhz @ 1150V; Mem 5800Mhz

That's the best I can get out of it.

HeX what sort of temps were you getting at around the 1.17V mark? Just did 1240 at 1.16V but temp peaked at 70

About 68-69 I think at 1.17V, so about the same as you. Also, good clock garriec, make sure you do some game testing though, as I found I could pass heaven at 1.15 easy enough, but i'd get minor corruption in BF3, taking volts up to 1.17 fixed it.

what's an acceptable voltage maximum? mine just crashes in furmark constantly and I'm 1190 @ 1210V and still have no joy. I'm thinking maybe because my voltage was maxed out at the start that the card may be a bad overclocker.

TBH anything 1150+ is a good OC for these cards (33% OC). 1200+ means you got lucky.

If you can do 1150 at reasonable volts i'd say you're not doing too bad.

Hex where did you get your card from? I know we can't name companies but we can drop clues.

Was it from the Rainforest site?

I got mine from OCUK from the first batch they got in.

Just installed Catalyst Control Centre now and there is a mismatch with the Memory (I think).

Seems like the early cards are good overclockers then Hex. Here is a GPUZ reading of my card in case it helps anyone. Maybe you can determine from the bios which cards are known to be good clockers vs the ones which aren't.

Memory reading is fine, 1450x4 = 5800 (quad speed for GDDR5).

Also you want to up your powertune to +20%, stops the card throttling under heavy usage (not that i've noticed much usage).

Hey guys, whats the 100% safe 24/7 voltage for this card?
I have the Sapphire 7850 OC with 1.075V default voltage.

1200/5800 @ 1.176V is stable. Load temp 69-70C.

I was too quick to judge, the card crashed in BF3 MP twice (Ultra Settings after 10 mins of gameplay)

I will need to reduce to lower speeds or stick at the default clock speeds even though Uniengine and Furmark pass.

Even putting the power options to 20% did not help, and to be honest whilst playing I did not notice an increase in fps (maybe 1 or 2 more in bf3)

is there any harm in upping voltage? i know heat is usually what people answer that question with, but my temps are fine. in fact i like gpu tweak by asus as it has a cool adjustment utility for fan temps. i have increased them a bit (still under 50% at load) and with my OC temps stay under 60c even running unigine.

right now i have:

core - 1100
mv - 1095
RAM - 5400
temps - <60c

how high can i get the voltage safely? is it all about temps or is there more damage concern when increasing volts?

This is what I found when playing crysis2, everything fine in unigine at 1150, but it crashes in about 10mins, had to drop the clock to 1125 to get it stable. Card runs great, but a bit disappointed in the clocks compared to the others I've seen here.

Mine is rock on stable in anything I throw at it, that's MSI version 1200/1135/5800. Hit a max temp of 66C whilst playing BF3 and fan didn't go over 47%. Guess I'm a lucky one, can probably lower the volts a bit as well.

Well I think like 50-60s on the Ultra preset on multiplayer. I never seem to get stupidly crazy high FPS though, but it never drops. Not sure about the increase from stock though, I dunno how people get these crazy high FPS levels :(

Don't use Furmark for stability testing. New cards have complex power management circuits that Furmark activates the second it's turned on. Better to use looping benched such as Heaven which provide a better real life load on the gpu.

Oh man :( mine was sweet as a nut 1200/5800 at 1.176v and had sailed through heaven and BF3 ultra @ 1900x1200 then...........

then I saw garriec had posted and I thought I know I will see if I can lower mines even more and after a couple of driver restarts whilst trying to bench Heaven I got 2 screens filled with funny grey lines. I later read its called the grey screen of death?.

I should've left well alone. Anyway I was using catalyst 12.3 with CCC and GPUTweak 2.0.6.0

I haven't used an ATI card since my 9800pro so I am hoping this is just a driver thing but I am getting worried I may have to return this card. D'OH

I've been slowly putting a new build together and was looking into the MSI 7850. It's out of stock with Overclockers at the moment so I searched google and found this thread.

It was bad enough when it was just the card out of stock, now reading about the overclocking potential of these cards is just piling the misery on. It's so bad I have had to register on the forums so I can follow and update this thread when I get my own card.

Guess I'll take this opportunity to say "Hi" to everyone and I hope to see you all around the forums when my new machine is up and running and I'm trying to overclock (for the first time!)
