How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

Really wanted one for the weekend and have now resorted to looking elsewhere due to the unfortunate delay with the HIS one.

Can pick up a dual fan SAPPHIRE AMD Radeon HD 7850 OC Edition with 920MHz Core & 5000MHz GDDR5 for a little more.

I would assume that as it is clocked out of the box, it should have some extra left? Dual BIOS as well, the second BIOS already has a further OC on it.

was looking to buy 2 7850's for playing bf3, if i did what kind of fps would i get with 1080p all full settings but dont like the idea of crossfire,
not liking the sound of micro stutter and other possible issues, so might go for the 7970 instead

I have a Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 so I don't think crossfire is gonna work very well with one of the slots being a x4? Not entirely sure though.

I ran 2x4870's on a x16/x4 board & found my fps to be around 10-15% below where they should have been, so I expect any gains from running 2x7850's over a 7970 would probably be cancelled out.

Fairly certain it doesn't have a second BIOS. I have this exact model in my machine just now.

Plenty of headroom in this particular model and for the most part they all do 1200/5800 on 1.176 (your mileage may vary ofc)

I think 1200 core as a given might be a bit optimistic, theres quite a few that won't do that even at 1.2v. 1150 is a more realistic prediction I reckon.

As somebody who's utterly new to this are there any basic guidelines I should be following for the overclock? Is there a voltage/temperature I should be aiming for if I want to get it to around 1115, and what incremental steps should I take to get though?

1050 = ~stock voltage
1100 = ~stock voltage - 1.15
1150 = ~1.15-1.2V
1200 = ~1.17-1.225V
1200+ = ~1.2V+

As a rough guide. Every GPU is different, so you're going to have to play with it and find out what yours can do.

Temp wise, as long as you are under 90C you are going to be fine. Aim for around 85C max.

As for steps, go straight to 1050, give it a quick test, it should be fine. Then go for 1100 and get that stable. Then go for 1150 and get that stable. Then if you have headroom (voltage and temp wise) go for 1200.

Run a few different tests.

When clocking mine I used Heaven for a base stability test. If it could pass a full bench on that then I tested it in 3Dmark and the Crysis2 benchmark.

If it passed all 3 I counted it as stable and moved on.

Okay I'll give them all a go when I'm ready to, thank's a lot. I think I just figured out the optimal OC to get my to 4.5 (which was a bit of a pain with the p8z68-v lx) so I'll start playing with the GPU after a few hours of prime.

i had several clocks that failed heaven during the 2nd or 3rd run, so 1 run alone isn't enough IMO. i opted to test it on a 30 minute basis (5-6 runs) to make sure. some people go all night, but that's probably overkill.

not a single clock i tried failed 3dmark, so i'm not sure it's that great of a benchmark to use.
