How to take stunning pictures - channel 5 tv series

Just something very wrong watching them take shots at arms length via live view, I'm sure most people don't even shoot like that with a P&S when taking snaps.

How ever they did kinda explain the very basics of lighting and composition which to the complete novice is something that's probably not even part of the thought process when starting out.

Just watched it on Five Demand now and felt a little disappointed.

The first episode definitely was concentrating on composition, i was expecting it to take a more technical approach talking about limitations of compact cameras with ISO noise etc..

Will wait and see how things progress.

I wasn't expecting anything too technical but that was far from what I expected. They could have at least shown them how to hold a camera, I wouldn't have been happy with any of those photos to be honest... hope the series gets better.

It's safe to say it's aimed at people who are beginners, and I guess it's better to concentrate on composition at first even if you're still using the 'auto' setting on the cam.

It's all too easy to get caught up setting ISO and worrying about aperture but if your composition is poor then the pic will be boring even if it's technically sound. However, I'm also hoping that it's going to go into a little more depth in the next episodes.

Looking at the website it just looks like they are going to focus on certain areas each week, landscapes/street/action etc etc.

I think the level of detail may be sub par for most users on here as I suppose being on mainstream TV its aimed at people with little to no idea about what "makes" a photo, a program aimed at knowledgeable amateurs shal we say that started to go into the realms of ISO, Apeture etc etc wouldn't appeal to half as many people.

I think I will keep watching though.

Exactly. Just because this is about photography, we shouldn't forget the real reason that this program is there - to sell advertising and the channel.

If they opened up the series by talking about ISO and aperture, I doubt they'd even get to the sixth episode before it was pulled...

I think you're right. I watched it and was surprised at how little was in this programme, considering the self inflating title given to it. I think misleading doesn't even come close to describing the 'show'. It should really have been entitled "so you've been given a camera and don't know how to use it"

this sums up my thoughts

Its not about how to take great pictures, the first episode was about where to start taking a picture.

As others have said, too much too soon and they could scare the newbies off. Heres hoping it gets better later on.

Daft thing is, i was expecting to learn something from this, i ownly own a P+S and barely know how to adjust f stop + exposure on my manual controls , but even i didnt learn anything from that first ep.

I noticed loads of product placement, and little content. I'm a beginner at present, but I didn't learn anything apart from we should buy a Lumix G2!
