Make a mustard sandwich and eat it before you approach her, this will give you the charisma and confidence to speak to her.

ask her to pickup your napkin, you can put this on your lap and leave the old fella out underneath it. Hey presto you're over the initial awkwardness of making a pass and the later awkwardness of getting naked all in one fell swoop. If she's not keen, scream and people will think she was up to no good!

Failing that just say hello and ask if she'd like to go out for a drink some time

I contacted the duty manager later that night inquiring about the girl, and he suggests I turned up the next time she works and get to speak to her then.

How shall I go about this when I'm there? As she will be working, I can't really stop her and talk for ages! Don't unleash the psycho on her, although you've already been checking into her so maybe that's just too late.

Just talk to her and tell her you'd like to ask her out. If she says no, take in on the chin and move on.
 
This seems awfully close to what happened to me. I met this girl at a shop, which I visited for work related reasons. I had to speak to someone else in the shop basically so she had to use the microphone thing to alert the deputy manager. Anyway there was this whole hanging around time and we made small chats. I was annoyed that the deputy manager arrived mid-conversation and I didn't get to finish it off, ask for her name or ask her out etc.

Anyway, I went back a couple of weeks after and used buying something as an excuse to approach the till, said hello to her but she was a bit quiet though no unfriendly in anyway. I wimped out because of that and didn't find my balls to go back till about 5 minutes later. Walked straight up to her and asked if she was seeing anyone, and popped the question.

The outcome was unexpected...

Admitly the experience was pretty scary, first time I ever asked a complete stranger out for sure. But again, if I didn't ask I wouldn't ever have a chance.

So yeah, I'd say just be blunt and ask the question. Even if it's a rejection, and however often she gets asked out - it's still flattering to be asked out long as it's not by a nutter. So no trenchcoat, okay?

When I asked if she's seeing anyone, she said she's in between things, which kinda implied she chose not to reject me out right, or she's just very honest.

I followed that by explaining that I wanted to ask her out, she said to give her a couple of weeks.

That was week and a half ago, so it's neither a yes or no.

I think she was at least flattered by the way she laughed when I popped the questions. But if she's in between things (not that I understood what exactly she meant by it) then I'd rather not push anything, certainly not getting my hopes up for anything. At least now I can open with "So how about that drink?" next time I see her... which I've always found uncontextual and cliched as the very first line.
