HP DM1

Battery life probably taken from manufacturer website, and they always inflate their claims. I usually take 30% off and get in the ballpark.

My sister is in the market for a small and cheap ultra portable. What's the build quality on those things? And the bloatware? Would recomend a full OS re-install, but she isn't too clued about computers.

Surprised they haven't bested my two years old UL30A. Not the best build quality, but it's an awesome little machine. Battery life well over 6.5 hours, the screen could be better also, but I've never been impressed by any of the competition either.

Yes it is in ***** I am looking at these. I had the 4027 for a week and the internal mic failed so they had no stock of another and gave me a 4020. I did'nt open yet to be sure due to my money back 7 day deal by Curry's if unopened to be sure the battery is the same as I loved the long life of the 4027. I should have taken note of the part number of the 4027 when I had it and looked at the display model of the 4020 and seen if they were the same. As you reckon the batteries is the same then yes the 4020 is the good deal with the larger hard drive. You would think they would increase the model number higher than the 4027 but who cares if the spec is the same i guess. Looks like I will open this, THX for the response.

Can't say I've noticed, I'm certainly not getting anywhere near the 7+ hours of reviews but I am doing between 5-6, I don't use min brightness, think I am at 4 but have it configured to dim on idle and shut screen down after 1 min.

Flash games shouldn't be taxing your CPU, though they will be running on the GPU

See what else is running, probably have a process using CPU (make sure you show process from all users) on a new laptop all the updates are quite taxing initially like the dotnet stuff, after its installed it proceeds to do a lot of stuff to your machine in the background when using it.

It was the widgets that were stealing CPU cycles, and having a negative impact on the battery life. I think also I was expecting too much and expecting a runtime of what my EEE PC was able to achieve.

After undervolting my HP DM1 I am quite pleased with the battery life, I'm able to undervolt mine by quite a large amount.

Here's a quick benchmark I made of Minecraft, finally others can see what the Fusion is like with Minecraft as there really doesn't seem to be much info out there on how well the game runs.

It's very playable.

Just got a 4020, but this is the first time i've bought an off the shelf computer, i have built my own. Can i just unistall all the HP bloat stuff, i will leave drive guard and coolsense on.

I fitted an OCZ SSD in mine and did a full clean install using Win 7 64bit using drivers from the HP site. Been running for a couple of weeks now, I am very, very impressed - I was running it at 1080P output over HDMI into my Dad's 37in Panasonic TV, watched a couple of Big Bang Theory episodes recorded in HD as mkv files, output was really smooth and sharp. The ATI 6230 gpu handles HD output very smoothly. I've found that 4gig memory is plenty, I hardly ever go over 50% memory usuage.

Ok I can confirm a few things i found
I had the 4027 for a week and now own the 4020. These have identical battery life. The screen has better viewing angles on the 4020 and obviously the 4020 is the larger 500gb hard drive. My 4027 was faulty with the internal mic not working so maybe there was an issue with the screen viewing angle also cause it seems odd they would put different screens on the 2 different models but then again who knows. So guys if you have a choice, then go for the 4020.

its not unheard of to have second sources for panels, both TVs and monitors can often have different panels for the same model, supposedly of the same spec but there can be sufficient difference that users prefer one type over another, don't see why this laptop would be any different.

Has anyone used the AMD/ATI drivers instead of the HP branded ones? Seems to stop the brightness shortcut keys (F2, F3) from working?! :s

I use AMD drivers and have no problems with the brightness keys, I have noticed the laptop has lost them now and again, but there is no set reason I can see for this, happens more so coming out of sleep when changing power profiles.

I'm unclear how to get access to the memory slots and HD on my 4020. The docs make it sound as if the bottom of the unit slides off towards the front of the machine. But I can't make it budge. Is there a knack to to this?

On the 4027 you have to hold the battery release open as well - maybe the 4020 is the same.

On mine, I lick my palm to get it clammy then push down on the casing and give a short sharp push away and it usually comes off first go.

Hi. Does anyone know the best/easiest way to reset/reinstall the operating system on an HP DM1z? This is so someone else can have it as a clean install and with all my files permanenty erased from it. Cheers.

I was not able to use my gaming PC yesterday due to packing stuff up for a move so thought I would try the dm1, didn't hold out a lot of hope but it did a grand job.

Played Dead Island online with some friends for a few hours, I won't lie it wasn't perfect and I had to knock it down a bit compare to my gaming PC, but stuff dropping res slightly is fine on this screen due to fine pixels (1024x600 and 720p looks OK even when not native) but for the most part it was plenty playable probably no worse than playing on a PS3.

Hey guys,

In a bit of a dilema with this one: I'm currently waiting for a part that might fix my laptop (hp mini 311c) and it's not due to arrive for a few weeks. Furthermore, I don't hold much hope for it actually getting fixed - it's a new bios chip. So naturally I've been looking around for a replacement and came across this one. However, I notice that the dm1 is on sale currently on the hp website until the 13th - down from £550 to £300 and I guess this is reflected in the price on the currys site. What I want to know is if the sale price will stick and if not, what would it go back up to? Any ideas? My two options seem to be

1) Wait for current laptop to be repaired and if that's a failure, buy the dm1z at a potentially higher price

2) buy the dm1 now and potentially end up with 2 laptops...

What would you do?

What would you do?

How patient are you?

You could buy it from ******and then wait up to 21 days before returning it if your original laptop gets fixed. To quote their T&C:

"If you change your mind and would like to return your product, we're happy to exchange or refund it as long as:

• The product is in its original unopened and sealed packaging

• You return it within 21 days of date of purchase

• You have proof of purchase (Original receipt, delivery note, bank statement)"

So as long as you don't play with it you can buy now and return it in 3 weeks...

£300 is about the going rate sale or not, I paid about that after quidco from Pixmania when it was launched, at most it might go up by 50 from HP but other vendors will have it as cheap I'd imagine.
