HP DM1

Ive not got mine yet but id guess any ssd will fit, as for the os I believe they are all 32bit so you will need a 64bit version, it may or may not accept the key during install with your disc, if it doesnt just leave the key blank and when it gets into windows then enter the key and activate that way, if you have a a 4gb usb stick you can copy your win7 dvd to that and install that way

I've put Win 7 64 bit on mine successfully. Details are on pages 3-5 of this thread from memory.

DM1 with Seagate Momentus XT

Hi,
I've enjoyed reading this thread and am close to buying an HP DM1.
I'm thinking of upgrading the hard-drive to the hybrid Seagate Momentus XT 750GB + 8GB SSD drive.
I noticed a couple of people intended doing that too. Any feedback on this?
Specifically, I'm curious -
1. Did the XT drive really help with performance, both boot-up and in usage?
2. Did you notice deterioration in the battery life? I've read some reports the battery life shortened significantly.
3. Any complications/problems, either during installation or after?
4. Overall, worth the (not insignificant) price?
Thanks in advance!
CM

Fingers crossed getting mine on friday, im swapping the 4gb with 8gb 1333 (not sure what the 4gb is but I read it may support 1333) and the 320gb with a standard 500gb drive (I had already)

Won't be booting the original drive so when the time comes to trade on it will be vanilla :) Will be installing x64 naturally so will report back

I had a acer aspire 522 a short while back but 1ghz was a lil too slow so hopefully this will be better, i used a 500 xt in that and it was pretty snappy for general use so I see no reason why the 750 wont be, and in reality there wasnt a great deal of difference in battery life on that.

I would get teh 750gb xt myself but just not at the current prices, mines ended up costing £240 inc del (after cashback :) ) which I think is great value, will report back when it arrives

Came a day early :)

Does anyone else have bother with rubbish picture quality and also not fitting a tv or monitor when using the hdmi out? Had this on my 522 too :(

Just ordered the E-450 4Gb ram 320Gb HDD version of the DM1 - A8J13EA
Paid £299 - hope that's a good price? If not, please point me in the right direction, as they have a price guarentee.

Am planning on replacing the HDD with an SSD, probably 64Gb Crucial M4 - the 320Gb will go in a caddy and become network/travel storage - its only a tablet-replacement machine, not my my home PC, so it needs to be quick, rather than have a ton of HDD capacity.

Picked up a 4020sa e450 4gb ram and 500gb hdd for £319 as I needed a netbook that had a bit of grunt, only other comparable thing in the shop was a sony which was the same spec but 80 quid more.

So far i'm happy, definately faster than my previous netbooks, it's quite happy running oracle virtualbox with a couple of linux vm's up and being able to do other stuff at the same time which is pretty cool.

Looking to up the ram from 4 to 8gb so i can allocate more to vm's and not worry about how much the gpu needs. allthough i'll have to wipe n load 64bit win7

But i must admit i'm very tempted by a hybrid drive just dont know if i can justify the spend if it turns out to be only a marginal increase in performance.

Mine was an ea and it came with win7 64bit :) I upped the ram to 8gb and had also thought about a hybrid drive but tbh i think ill get a 240gb ssd if prices drop sub £200

Did think about an ssd but they are still a tad pricey and i need a decent sized hdd.

Plus I dont fancy paying the best part of what me lappys worth on a go faster drive.

Whats the difference between the 4020's and the 4027's? Been trying to find a list of what the differences are in the dm1 4000 range

Cheers

very little from what I can tell, the 4027 has a 500gb vs a 320gb from the 4020 etc other than that nothing as far as I can tell

I've put a Hybrid in mine can't really say that its boosted speeds by loads, I think in a lot of cases you are still held up by how fast the CPU can process the data, that said my DM1 boots up in seconds vs my core i7 work laptop so it must be doing something, I've done no scientific tests though.

I bought it because it was decent value with good space (750Gb, 130quid) versus an SSD and as you can only have one drive in here may as well be the best you can get.

The standard HDD in the DM1 is not bad anyway (I believe they're all 7200 rpm rather than 5400 rpm - mine's certainly 7200). A friend who has a well spec'd Alienware M11x (same size screen as DM1 but otherwise far superior hardware) and has tried both the momentus hybrid and SSD drives (clearly he has money to burn). Anyway, we really weren't that impressed with the hybrid drive (later he sold it on ebay), but the SSD (good spec one) was awesome. An SSD won't make up for the DM1's budget processor but I'm sure will make booting up, loading programmes, etc very very snappy. Having put my DM1 side by side with the pimped-up Alienware M11x we were both impressed by the DM1 given that it was less than 1/3 of the price of the M11x (not the base model).

The bottom line is that an SSD will make a big difference to any system, but you have to really want the snappyness it offers to accept the price tag and inevitable reduction in system drive size (unfortunately you can't have your cake and eat it). For my money, I'm going to upgrade from 4 to 8 GB RAM on my DM1 (also change from the 1.5 volt RAM currently installed to 1.35 volt RAM now available) and leave it at that.

Mines a 4020sa, product no a2d08ea#abu and has a 5400rpm 500gb drive.

Had a look on the HP site and just got more confused :)

HP Pavilion dm1-4020ea Entertainment Notebook PC (A2D11EA)
Internal drive
500 GB SATA (5400 rpm)

HP Pavilion dm1-4027ea Entertainment Notebook PC (A2D12EA)
Internal drive
320 GB SATA (5400 rpm)

I guess it was to do with whichever way the wind was blowing at the time when they were being clagged together or summit daft like that :p

Well I'll be upgrading mine to 8gb ram anyway and if a hybrid drive pops up at a really cheap price i may consider it.

That's what I thought too (from reading the HP spec sheets) until I downloaded the service manual; http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03084091.pdf (see page 49). None of the UK models have WWAN (ie internal 3G card) and none have a 640 GB HDD; so that just leaves variants with 7200 rpm drives. I then physically checked the actual spec of the hardware installed in my specific machine (edit: a 4027 sa variant - I slide the bottom cover off my machine to find the actual make and model of my HDD). Turns out it was 7200 rpm.

Well you can tell i'm not one for reading manuals, managed to start the webos boot by accident(still not sure how but a canny surprise), is this on the hdd or on the mboard?
ie once I shove in a new hdd is it bye bye webos?
