HP ML110 G7 32GB RAM - Cashback

^ Cheers, thanks for that.

Not got around to purchasing the server yet until I'm sure it can do what I want/need it to.

Basically I've have two 2TB hard drives full of data that I want to passthrough to a VM that I'd be using as my home server - possible?

To my understanding, if I passthrough the onboard Sata all ports are passedthrough and so I wont be able to install the server OS on a datastore using an onboard port, correct? So then ideally I'd be better off installing a PCI Sata card and passing that through instead, no? And if so, what cheap cards are completable?

Kingston KVR1333D3E9S/8G 8GB sticks have been validated as working in the ML110 G7.

Interesting as they are £50 a stick which is about the same price as the 4G sticks I have been buying. I shall await some more reports on this but it looks very promising. Thanks very much for the info :)

Considering you were concerned about the fan noise how are you finding it? I don't plan on using a PCIe card, so guess it's just the 2 fans that will be running 24/7. Would you say it's louder than a normal PC - after boot ofc.

NP,

The passthrough is for chipsets so all ports on the SATA chipset will be passed or none.

Saying that, the ML110 G7 has two SATA chipsets. One with two motherboard ports (one used by the DVDRom drive) and the BR110i (supports the 4 drives in the non-hotswap bays). You may be able to disconnect the DVDRom and use the two sata ports on the motherboard to passthrough but I have not personally tried it so cannot say for sure whether it will work.

If you are looking for a cheap controller then the M1015 is a popular choice but you will most likely need to flash it back to the LSI firmware (it is an OEM version of the LSI 9240 for IBM). The M1014/M1015 are also good contenders as they are rebadged LSI 9260-8i (256/512MB cache receptively). They can usually be found on EBay quite cheaply although the M1015 prices have gone up a bit recently.

P411i is another HP branded card with upgrade options like adding cache and a battery backup unit now or later as your needs may change. The P412 has recently been released so there are a few 411s floating around.

As always, check the VMWare HCL before buying as if it is not on the list, there is no guarantee it will be detected by vSphere.

Hi, I've been using a PCIe card in mine for all apart from the first week. Fan noise is louder than I would like in the same room as me. It's in the cupboard under the stairs on top of my rack so I don't notice it day to day.

From what I remember it was as quiet as a normal PC without a PCIe card, I recall being surprised at how quiet it was. The only concern would be that if it is louder than you want you can't do anything about it due to the custom fan monitoring and connectors (5 pin?). From what I'm told if the BIOS isn't happy with the RPM's then it will refuse to boot, so you can't 7v mod or swap out the HP fans.

I'd imagine it will be fine, but couldn't guarantee it.

Got the xeon 1 sitting on my desk, with the side off, yes the fan connectors are weird things I have never seen before, and yes it making miles more noise than I am readily happy with, going to put the side panel and air flow piece back on and see what happens.

hmm, it does seem to have settled down after awhile with the side on, but the fans are still audible, Still waiting for my raid card to arrive before I can vouch for the pci-noise issue though.

Are you running a recent BIOS? I'm not 100% sure as it was a while ago that I got mine but I do seem to recall it improving the fan settings. You can get very detailed temp values through one of the HP Windows apps, I forget which one it is but the board is covered in sensors.

I'd not want it sat on the desk next to me with a PCI-E card in it, but other than a modded BIOS I don't see that there is anything that can be done about it :(

I left it on over night, and it does seemed to have quietened down a bit and yes its running the latest bios. I have a rather large old workhouse hp laserjet to the otherside of my desk, the fans in that, don't bother me, but the 1's in the ML110 must just be at the wrong pitch.

Also am I right in thinking the raid setting wont pass un-raided disks through the controller?

Just an update.

My ML110 G7 is playing up...

Now it was playing up and had the main board and ram replaced before installing the Kingston ram so it may be completely unrelated but I wanted to post so people could hold back before I confirmed one way or another.

Only likely to have some sort of result after the weekend.

Hate to keep banging the same drum but does anyone know if they rotate or repeat the cashback deals? I think the microserver one expires on the 30th.

I'm really desperate to get one of these to use as an ESX host at home for learning purposes but am pained at paying more when they could have been had for much less.

HP offered cashback on the ML110 G6 and have done so several times on the G7.

But it comes around far less frequently than the MicroServer. The MS has been constant for over 2 years.

The G7 pops up every 4-6 months or so. Stays for a month or 2 and then disappears till the next 4-6 months.
