HP Pre 3 released

Wait guys, am I reading this right?

(£36 x 3 months) - 30 (quidco) = £78 for a year with the Pre 3? This is mad!!! :)

Pretty much, that's the 12-month Vodafone deal I went for (9 months free by redemption). It's not that mad considering the wholesale price they're buying them at is £30-40... And considering a lot of people will forget to claim their redemption, giving them bonus moolah.

So, anyway, I know it's a totally subjective question and I won't really base my decision on what people say, but which is the lesser evil for you folks, 24 months or 8GB? :p
I usually measure these things by asking, how often would it annoy me. eg every day, month etc. It depends what you need but 8Gb wouldn't bother me. But I hate being tied into long contracts, so I would go for the 8Gb over the 24 month contract any time...

Hmm... your way of thinking is elegant but it's a flawed equation with too many unknowns!:p

In the case of the 24month/16GB option, let's assume that I will get annoyed by my choice every single day for the latter 12 months (since I'd have been stuck in a contract for a minimum of 12 months anyway). But for the 12 month/8GB option, I would get annoyed by it every day that the phone's smaller storage was a problem for me, which, assuming it was every day I used it (a big assumption), is an unknown cause I don't know how long I'll use it for! I'm not planning to sell the Desire Z after all, so I always have the option of going back to it if I don't get on with the Pre at all (which could be for reasons completely unrelated to its storage).

But let's assume for the sake of argument that I don't have the Desire Z, I can't afford to buy another phone SIM-free, so I'd have to wait till my contract was up to get another phone (on another contract). In that case, being limited to 8GB would annoy me every single day for... 12 months again, exactly the same as for the 24month/16GB option! :p:D

I decided to take the plunge this morning and order the Pre3 from mobiles, they were doing a bundle with a touchpad. All was going swimmingly until they emailed me for a 'security check'. Turns out there was no security issue, and they'd sold all the stock to other people instead :( I do hate Carphone Warehouse, I really do, and this just makes me hate them more...

back-weighted?

mobiles cancel my order, because voda said my dreit rating failed. excpect, i have a contract with them currently, and one with o2 aswell. why wouldnt they accept this?

I'm very very tempted to go for the Smartphone 600 plan - double the minutes than the original plan, for only £15 more overall, bringing total to £93

Argh, DECISIONS! :D

PS Cheers for the explanation manveruppd :)

The phone so far seems great btw, the OS is a revelation and the UI is much better than any Android or iOS UI I've ever handled. Everything just seems to take one less swipe than it did on Android. I'm really hopeful Google will steal some of their UI tricks for Ice Cream Sandwich (which they said will be the first Android version that will be able to make do without buttons). The only things that bother me is the lack of some apps (eg. Skype, We7 and especially Kindle)

Skype comes built in, you add it as an IM account, along with the other supported protocols (GTalk/Yahoo).

I'm hopeful that people will get round to making them now that the entire initial batch of Pre 3s has basically sold out within a week. I'm not missing widgets so far, because having an app open as a card (eg Evernote) serves the same purpose of being able to give you the same information at a glance, but I haven't yet figured out how to set them to open at launch, or at least to put their shortcuts on the main homescreen rather than in the launcher list.

Install Preware, the chances are high someone has created a auto start app. I also recommend Mode Switcher - this allows you to set conditions and events. I use basic features for example at midnight I turn off all services bar normal telephone/sms. Save battery over night and not wake me up with emails.

Yep, I did notice the Skype chat account, but I couldn't figure out a way to make Skype calls to normal phones, that's why I wanted an app :) I occasionally make Skype calls to friends abroad, as well as to non-geographical UK numbers (0845 etc) cause numbers like that don't come included in my free minutes and it's loads cheaper than my network's rates. But I can do that stuff from my computer, the only app I'm REALLY missing is Kindle. I tried Kindle Cloud Reader but they don't support the WebOS browser yet, only Webkit-based ones (Chrome and Safari - yep, not even Firefox or IE). And of course there aren't any Webkit-based browsers on the WebOS app catalogue.

Don't worry, I plan to fully mod and hack it to within an inch of its life, Preware is just a mild preview of what I intend to do with it, like a PG-rated trailer for an R-rated movie!:D

Is redemption really that bad? They send you a letter to see your bill every few months, you send them the bill == massive savings!

Oh and please do not go for the auto cash back, shooting yourself in the foot tbh :(

AmTechFox, you'll be pleased to know that I just bit the bullet and bought the Pre 3 on the Smartphone 600 tariff :) WOO!

Now time to buy the touchstone! Any recommendations of where to buy?

I CANT MAKE A DECISION DAMN YOU ALL.

No whatsapp on webOS and no plans from whatsapp to be developed on it = no Pre 3 for me, that was the deal breaker!
