*** HP Reverb G2 Owners Thread ***

I wouldn't bother, the controllers are total gash. Maybe buy some used Vive stuff and use those instead with it.

Haptics aside, what's wrong with the controllers?

Holding both an oculus touch in my hand right now and a G2 control in the other. The oculus is a little smaller and feels slightly less weighty, nothing else feels different, the triggers, button placement is the same on my fingers and feels zero different in either hand. In other words practically the same in form factor, and from usage in games i have played them with no different in functionality.

Sure they have issues with camera occlusion in certain games, but all inside out carries that flaw in small ways.

I certainly wouldn't recommend the vive wands over the G2 devices.

There are two main flaws. The first is they use visible light, which is much more prone to tracking problems than using infra-red like the Oculus Touch controllers do, and this also uses a lot more power.

Secondly the cameras on the headset have a limited field of view downwards compared to the Oculus Quest and Quest 2, so it can lose tracking when your hands are at your sides which is a normal 'rest' position when playing some games, especially games with stick-based movement.

Anyone using/can recommend a displayport switch with their G2 (or experience with another headset)? I'm using four monitors usually so don't have a spare DP output so have to manually switch connections.

Received mine this week and first foray into VR, suitably mind blown. However I am not sure if it is quite for me with my slightly boss eyes. My ipd is just under 60 (58mm) and the sweet spot in which everything is in focus is pretty small. In Steam VR house the text is blurry unless I look at it exactly in the centre. However being a VR newb I am not sure this is down to my shortcomings, or its meant to be like that in general. The Lab is amazing and I was generally laughing out loud in places.

Anyone after the audio update firmware it was posted early here by voodoo (hp employee on the subreddit)

ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp112501-113000/sp112954.exe

- download installer
- obviously turn on your G2
- install installer and run (defasult path is C:\SWSetup)
- reboot PC after installation

It's a fix for the blackout at high volume levels:

FIXES:

  • Resolves a potential issue where displays may flicker or go black when playing certain titles at high volume levels.

Welcome to VR, your first experience is always pretty special. You're lucky to have tried experienced it on the G2.
I don't think your IPD is causing you issues there. The setting (60-68) on the G2 is pretty accommodating from what I've read. It will be fine +/-2mm, so real range is 58-70mm. Drop it to the minimum (where I have mine) and enjoy. The sweet spot you describe is the characteristic of these lenses, make sure you have the headset centered vertically correctly otherwise you might not be making the most of it. Slacken the straps completely and play with the position then tighten them back up.

Thanks Toothy, seems a lot better now having spent some time with the straps and putting the back part lower down my head. I also tried the option to force DX11 in DCS which seemed to make a good difference to smoothness with settings cranked up. The sensation of pulling some gradually harder maneouvers really had my guts going, amazing how it tricks your mind. No head aches or motion sickness though, thankfully, and no problems reading text around the cockpit while looking around.

Great stuff. All takes a bit of getting used to. Sounds like you're getting into it quick.

I've bought fpsVR from steam. Its a little widget that shows all frame rates and stats. For a couple pounds, its super useful. Shows up in game on your wrist or wherever you want it.
Found it great for tuning settings.

Have issues with overlaying apps like fpsVR been fixed yet with Nvidia's drivers?

I haven't noticed any drops in frames and micro stutters recently, but last advice was not to use them?

Thought I would fire up Fallout VR to give it a go. On my rift I used to feel queasy in seconds, only had a quick wonder around but even managed to put smooth walking and rotation on without an issue, I wonder if it was the screen door on the CV1 that used to make me feel motion sick before. The control mapping seemed all over the place though

There's a really good custom, i had 70+hrs with it over the holidays. 'G2 updated controller' i think, the only flaws were hit and miss manual scrapping and left and right quick favourited weapons on the quick dial. The rest of it was perfect though, the pipboy being super easy compared the nightmare of the Vive trackpad and awkwardness of the index stick. Probably the reason why i got super in to the game, a lot less frustrating.

Looks the bomb on the G2, lightyears beyond the initial release on the OG Vive, that screen door killed it.

If anyone else out there has a problem with the grippy cable, finding it snags against clothes etc. go on that well known big online shop and look for "qipuneky,6M,Cable Sleeve,Cable Tidy,Cable Protector,Cable Sleeve for TV, Computer, Office, Home Entertainment, Black (5mm)" it's braided cable sleeve (the stuff split down the entire length).

I sleeved a good portion cable with it and it slides over clothes without a problem now.

My G2 arrived today. First vr headset for me too. Mind blown initially. All I’ve done is wonder around the microsoft house and the steam house.

Couple of issues though....

1. Like others have mentioned, this “sweet spot” thing I can see being a real problem. I’d say only about 15-20% of the whole view is in focus in the centre. If I just move my eyes to look around then it’s blurry and so obviously not as crisp and beautiful, it’s very very distracting.

does the Quest 2 have this issue? Does the index? If not I reckon I might prefer consistent clarity across the whole image, even if the resolution is lower

I’ve read about making sure it’s All aligned properly, and that maybe getting a modded gasket will help to get eyes nearer the lenses. Is this worth it? Any Significant difference?
I have my doubts though. Is this just how it is? Not sure I can live with that as it’s so jarringly obvious, as the sweet spot area is so damn incredible.

2. I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing with regards to using either Windows own vr settings, steams own vr settings, something called openXR vr settings, or a combination of all three. Can anyone link me to some definitive info please on what to use for what games and why?

Good idea. Are we all gonna custom cable our headsets now? Maybe I could colour code it to my build ;-)

You'll get used to the sweet spot when you get into a game and give it some time. I would take the resolution over a larger sweet spot for sure. Until you've coped with screen door and not being able to read text or see into the distance, you don't understand how good the G2 is. A facial gasket would be recommended, but only supposed to increase sweet spot area marginally, that's more for better FOV. Take off the gasket and look through the lenses without one (carefully, not to damage the lenses).

For WMR settings, within windows options. Make sure it's set to full resolution and 90hz. I've not messed with the openXR settings. Steam is where you'll make most the adjustments. Notably to the SS (Super Sampling). For some reason, steam over samples by default on the G2. You'll want to set that slider to more closely match the resolution of the lenses. From memory it's somewhere around 40-50% (2160x2160).

The Index has the biggest FOV and sweet spot of the mainstream headsets, but that comes at the cost of horrendous lens glare. It's really bad - so bad I couldn't use it for media playback, though it's not as bad when playing games - on occasion though it does like to remind you that it's still there.
Quest 2's lenses have a reasonably wide sweet spot, but they too have a bit of glare.
Funnily enough the best all-round VR lenses I tried were the Oculus Go. Wide sweet spot and no lens glare to speak of. I'm not sure why the Quest 2's lenses seem worse.

Don't have a g2 but generally you need to get used to looking with your head not your eyes. I believe quest 2 has a larger sweet spot. Still suggest ordering one click and collect and trying it fora week before just returning it if you prefer the g2. If you do it soon enough you'll still be in the 14 day return time for the g2 as well.
